[Xinhua News Agency Micro Special] South Korea's largest opposition party, the Democratic Party of Korea, is about to elect a new party leader. The support rate of former party leader Lee Jae-myung is far ahead of the other two candidates. As of the 11th, he has won 16 local primaries, winning nearly 90% of the votes in total.

The Democratic Party of Korea will hold a national congress on the 18th to elect a new party leader based on the results of local primaries, opinion polls and online surveys. According to the party's regulations, candidates for party leader cannot hold leadership positions within the party. Lee Jae-myung announced his resignation as party leader in June.

In the two party primaries held in Daejeon and Sejong in central South Korea on the 11th, Lee Jae-myung won 90.81% and 90.21% of the votes respectively, far ahead of the other two candidates, Kim Doo-gwan and Kim Ji-soo (transliteration). So far, Lee Jae-myung has won 16 of the 17 local primaries, and the last one is scheduled to be held in the capital Seoul on the 17th.

According to South Korean media, it is widely expected that Lee Jae-myung will be successfully re-elected as the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, and he is also seen as the party's favorite candidate for the 2027 South Korean presidential election. In the 2022 presidential election, Lee Jae-myung lost to the People's Power Party candidate Yoon Seok-yeol by a narrow margin.

From August to September last year, Lee Jae-myung went on a hunger strike for 24 days to protest Yoon Seok-yeol's policies, and later suspended his duties for a while due to his deteriorating health. (End) (Zhang Jing)
