Chinese academic community remembers Tsung-Dao Lee: Cultivating a large number of reserve talents for scientific and technological development

China News Service, Beijing, August 11 (Reporter Sun Zifa) A memorial service for Mr. Tsung-Dao Lee was held at the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on August 11. Representatives of the Chinese academic community attended the meeting to pay tribute to him, believing that Mr. Lee had brought China's high-energy physics to the forefront of the world and cultivated a large number of reserve talents for China's basic research and applied science development.

Wei Zhixiang, deputy director of the Bureau of Frontier Science and Basic Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, pointed out that Mr. Tsung-Dao Lee has always cared about and supported the basic research work of the academy, promoting the leapfrog development of basic research talents in the Chinese Academy of Sciences and even the whole country; he has long insisted on participating in a series of academic activities between China and the United States, actively promoting the establishment of relevant institutions, and laying a solid foundation for the good situation of international cooperation in basic research between China and the United States.

Academician Gao Yuanning, Dean of the School of Physics at Peking University, said that Mr. Tsung-Dao Lee made extremely far-reaching and forward-looking plans for the construction and development of Peking University's physics discipline, and personally promoted the cultivation of high-level talents, pioneering cutting-edge interdisciplinary research and international exchanges and cooperation in Peking University's physics and related disciplines.

Zhou Shangui, director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that the construction and development of the institute has not only greatly benefited from the China-US Joint Training Program for Physics Graduates (CUSPEA), the postdoctoral mobile station system, the National Natural Science Foundation, etc., which were suggested and promoted by Mr. Tsung-Dao Lee, but has also been receiving selfless help from Mr. Lee.

Academician Wang Yifang, Director of the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered a commemorative report entitled "Mr. Tsung-Dao Lee's Contributions to China's Science and Education", comprehensively reviewing Mr. Tsung-Dao Lee's academic career of more than 60 years and his outstanding contributions to China's high-energy physics, science and education, and talent training.

Wang Yifang said that Mr. Tsung-Dao Lee has brought China's high-energy physics to the forefront of the world and has trained a large number of reserve talents for the development of China's basic research and applied sciences. The best way to remember Mr. Lee is to continue to promote his scientific spirit and unfinished cause.

Li Zhongqing, the eldest son of Li Zhengdao, sent a written speech to the memorial service, saying that today's memorial service is the first event to commemorate his father. He revealed that his father said in the last few days of his life: "I will always be a part of you, and you will always be a part of me."

The memorial service was attended by more than 330 people, including academicians, experts, teachers and students from more than 30 universities and research institutes in China, representatives of Li Zhengdao's family, relatives, friends, colleagues and people from all walks of life.

Tsung-Dao Lee was a famous Chinese physicist and Nobel Prize winner in Physics. He passed away at his home in San Francisco, USA, in the early morning of August 4, local time, at the age of 97. (End)
