During the peak summer tourist season, jellyfish stings have occurred frequently on many beaches in South Korea. According to statistics, about 2,900 jellyfish stings have been reported in South Korea this summer, and the actual number is probably much higher.
South Korea's JoongAng Ilbo reported on the 7th, citing data from the South Korean Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, that as of the 4th of this month, South Korea has received about 2,900 reports of jellyfish stings this summer. Considering that many people and tourists will not report to the relevant departments after being stung, it is estimated that the actual number of such incidents is more than statistics show.
Specifically, the most jellyfish stings occurred in Busan, a port city in southern South Korea. According to city government statistics, as of the 5th, six of the city's seven beaches had reported jellyfish stings, totaling 947. Among these six beaches, Haeundae Beach had the most jellyfish stings, with 328.
As of the 4th, Jeju Island has reported 346 jellyfish stings this summer, significantly higher than the 92 cases last summer; Gangwon Province has reported 554 cases this summer, significantly higher than the 45 cases last summer.
Experts analyzed that the surge in jellyfish along the coast of South Korea this summer may be related to many reasons, including global warming, eutrophication of seawater, and an increase in man-made objects drifting in the ocean, which provide a "place" for jellyfish to reproduce.
There are two common types of jellyfish along the coast of South Korea, namely Portuguese man-of-war and Echizen jellyfish. The Portuguese man-of-war usually has a diameter of 20 to 30 centimeters and is relatively less toxic, while the Echizen jellyfish can reach a diameter of two meters and is more toxic.
