Recently, a road connecting the Afghan capital Kabul and the Aynak Copper Mine, an important Chinese investment project in Afghanistan, was officially started, marking new progress in China's key investment project in Afghanistan. China has been waiting for 16 years to start this strategic project, which can be called the "No. 1 China-Afghanistan" project, as soon as possible.

The Aynak copper mine is located in Logar Province, Afghanistan, only 35 kilometers southeast of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. Data shows that the Aynak copper mine is one of the few large copper mines in the world that has not yet been developed, and it is also the largest copper mine in Afghanistan with the best resources. The total proven copper reserves currently exceed 705 million tons, with an average copper content of 1.56% and a copper metal content of more than 10 million tons. In addition, a report from the United States Geological Survey shows that Afghanistan has far more mineral reserves than previously expected, with iron ore reserves alone between 5 billion and 6 billion tons. The Aynak copper mine is also a key to unlocking Afghanistan's mineral reserves.

In the 1970s, the then Soviet Union tried to mine the Aynak copper mine. But now, only some exploration boreholes remain. In 2007, the project was put up for bidding, attracting companies from the United States, China and other countries. In the end, MCC Group and Jiangxi Copper Group formed a Chinese consortium to obtain 100% of the mining rights of the project (MCC Group holds 80% of the future project company). In 2008, the mining contract for the Aynak copper mine was signed, and the Chinese consortium obtained the 30-year mining rights of the Aynak copper mine. On July 9, 2009, the Aynak copper mine in Afghanistan held a groundbreaking ceremony at the project camp in Logar Province.
