BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- U.S. troops in northeastern Syria were attacked by a drone on the same day, U.S. officials said on the 9th, and initial reports showed no casualties.
According to Reuters, the attack took place in the "Lumalin Landing Area." An unnamed U.S. official said: "Initial reports indicate that no one was injured, but medical assessments are being conducted. We are still assessing the damage."
This is the second attack on the US military in the Middle East in recent times. On the 5th, an air base in western Iraq where US troops were stationed was attacked by two rockets, injuring at least five US soldiers. The US Department of Defense accused the attack of being carried out by Iranian-backed proxies. Iran did not respond to this, but said that the United States was responsible for the recent assassination of the leader of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) because it supported Israel in the new round of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The United States currently has about 900 troops stationed in Syria. The Syrian government has repeatedly stated that it demands that the United States end its illegal presence on Syrian territory.
After the new round of Israeli-Palestinian conflict broke out on October 7 last year, some Iraqi militia groups repeatedly launched rockets and drones at US military bases in Iraq, claiming that this was a response to the US support for Israel's fight against Hamas. On January 28 this year, a US military base in northeastern Jordan near the Syrian border was attacked by a drone, killing three US soldiers and injuring more than 40 people. This is the first time since the outbreak of this round of Israeli-Palestinian conflict that the US has reported that US soldiers have been attacked and killed in the Middle East. In retaliation, the US military launched air strikes on more than 85 militia targets in Syria and Iraq on February 2. (Liu Xi)
