The legendary technology tycoon and "Google's goddess of wealth" has passed away.

On August 9, local time, Susan Wojcicki, a former Google executive and former CEO of YouTube, died of lung cancer at the age of 56. Her husband, Dennis Troper, announced the news on social media platforms. Google CEO Sundar Pichai published an article to express his condolences, saying that Wojcicki was the "core" of Google's history.

Although Susan Wojcicki is known as the "Google Goddess of Wealth" and plays an important role in Google, she is very low-key and has been called "the most important Googler you've never heard of" by the media. Since 2011, Susan Wojcicki has been selected as one of the "100 Most Influential Women of the Year" by Forbes magazine every year.

YouTube is an online video sharing platform where users can upload, share and watch videos. It has 239 million users in the United States and 2.562 billion users worldwide. This figure reflects the wide influence and popularity of YouTube as a video sharing platform around the world.

The death of a tech mogul

On August 9, local time, Susan Wojcicki, a former Google executive and former CEO of YouTube, died of lung cancer at the age of 56. Her husband, Dennis Tropper, announced the news on the social media platform.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, posted a message on the X platform to mourn Wojcicki, saying: "My dear friend Susan Wojcicki has been fighting cancer for two years. I am very sad about her death. She was a central figure in Google's history. It is hard to imagine what the world would be like without her."

In a letter to Google employees, Pichai said Susan Wojcicki "used her position to build a better workplace for everyone," including becoming the first woman at Google to take maternity leave. He wrote that "her advocacy for parental leave set a new standard for companies around the world."

According to reports, Susan Wojcicki was born in Palo Alto, California, USA in 1968. She graduated from Harvard University and received a Master of Science degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz and a Master of Business Administration degree from the Anderson School of Management at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Susan Wojcicki is one of the most prominent women in Silicon Valley. She joined Google in 1999 and was the 16th employee. In the early days of Google, she rented the garage of Susan Wojcicki's home, which means that she was the landlord of co-founders Brin and Page.

During Susan Wojcicki's tenure as Google's advertising chief, Google's advertising revenue grew from zero to over $50 billion in 2013.

In 2006, she was involved in Google's acquisition of video site YouTube for $1.65 billion, and Susan Wojcicki was appointed CEO of YouTube in 2014.

In February 2023, after nine years as CEO of YouTube, Susan Wojcicki stepped down as CEO. At the time, Susan Wojcicki said in a letter to employees that she was leaving to "start a new chapter and focus on my family, health, and personal projects that I'm passionate about."

Although Susan Wojcicki is known as the "Google Goddess of Wealth" and plays an important role in Google, she is very low-key in her life and was once called by the media "the most important Googler you've never heard of."

Since 2011, Susan Wojcicki has been selected as one of the "100 Most Influential Women of the Year" by Forbes magazine. Former Google CEO Schmidt said: "Her quick and bold thinking is admirable and she is extremely influential in the company and even in Silicon Valley."

Wojcicki’s family has deep roots in Silicon Valley and the Bay Area as a whole. One of her sisters is Anne, the co-founder and CEO of 23andMe. Another sister, Janet, is a professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco. Meanwhile, their mother, Esther Wojcicki, is a renowned educator who has written extensively about how to raise successful children.

The Wojcicki family was tragically stricken earlier this year when their 19-year-old son, Marco Tropper, died while a student at UC Berkeley.

Global super giant

YouTube is an online video sharing platform where users can upload, share and watch videos. It was founded by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim in 2005. The website has become one of the most popular video sources on the Internet, with 239 million users in the United States and 2.562 billion users worldwide. This figure reflects the wide influence and popularity of YouTube as a video sharing platform around the world.

In addition, YouTube's user activity is very high, with users watching more than 1 billion hours of YouTube content every day, which shows the attractiveness of YouTube content and user stickiness.

According to the financial report released by Google recently, the total revenue in the second quarter of this year was US$84.742 billion, a year-on-year increase of 13.59% and a month-on-month increase of 5.22%; net profit was US$23.619 billion, a year-on-year increase of 28.59% and a month-on-month decrease of 0.18%; capital expenditure was US$13.186 billion, a year-on-year increase of 91.43% and a month-on-month increase of 9.77%.

Among them, Google search and other revenue was US$48.509 billion, a year-on-year increase of 13.8%; YouTube advertising revenue was US$8.663 billion, a year-on-year increase of 13%, lower than the expected US$8.93 billion; Google Network revenue was US$7.444 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 5.2%; Google subscription, platform and device revenue was US$9.312 billion, a year-on-year increase of 14.4%; Google Cloud revenue was US$10.347 billion, a year-on-year increase of 28.8%; Other Bets revenue was US$365 million, a year-on-year increase of 28.1%.

Analysts pointed out that Google's second-quarter revenue and diluted earnings per share exceeded Wall Street analysts' previous expectations, but YouTube advertising and revenue failed to meet expectations, which once caused the stock price to plummet.

Regarding the slowdown in YouTube advertising growth, management attributed it to the high year-on-year base in the second quarter. The high base came from the fact that Asia-Pacific retailers began advertising on YouTube in the second quarter of last year, and the base bonus period ended in the second quarter of this year.
