On August 11, Beijing time, IOC President Bach announced that he would not seek re-election as IOC President.
Bach's statement is as follows:
Dear friends of the Olympic community:
Today, I announce to the 145th Session that I do not wish to continue my term as IOC President beyond the term limits set out in the Olympic Charter.
Given our close and trusting partnership, I must share with you the reasons that led me to this decision. To this end, I attach the speech I delivered on this occasion.
I hope that I can count on you to continue to build a trusting partnership and friendship, for which I am very grateful.
In September 2013, Bach was elected as the ninth President of the International Olympic Committee for an eight-year term. On March 10, 2021, at the 137th Session of the International Olympic Committee, Bach was successfully re-elected for a four-year term. His second term will end in 2025.
