According to Iranian media reports on the 9th, citing Ali Fadavi, deputy commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iran will follow the orders of Supreme Leader Khamenei to "severely punish" Israel for the assassination of Hamas leader Haniyeh in Tehran. Asked whether Iran will postpone its retaliatory actions until after the next round of ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas on August 15, Iran's permanent mission to the United Nations said it hoped that Iran's response "would not undermine the potential ceasefire in terms of timing and manner."

Iranian media quoted Ali Fadavi as saying, "The Supreme Leader's orders to severely punish Israel and pay for the blood debt of martyr Haniyeh are clear and unambiguous... These orders will be implemented in the best possible way."

Iran and Hamas have accused Israel of assassinating Haniyeh on July 31. Israel has neither claimed responsibility nor denied the killing, further fuelling fears that the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip could spiral into a wider conflict in the Middle East.

When asked by reporters how to respond to Fadavi's remarks, John Kirby, the White House national security spokesman, said that the United States is ready to defend Israel with substantial resources in the region. "When we hear such remarks, we must take them seriously, and we do so."
