On February 28, the National Bureau of Statistics released the Statistical Communiqué on National Economic and Social Development in 2021. The communiqué disclosed that according to the preliminary calculations of the National Bureau of Statistics, the gross domestic product (GDP) for the whole year was 114,367 billion yuan, an increase of 8.1% over the previous year, equivalent to about 17.73 trillion US dollars at the average exchange rate.

In 2021, the annual per capita GDP was 80,976 yuan (about 12,600 US dollars), an increase of 8.0% over the previous year. The gross national income (GNI) was 113,351.8 billion yuan (about 17.60 trillion US dollars), an increase of 7.9% over the previous year, and the per capita GNI was 80,263 yuan (about 12,400 US dollars). This is the first time in history that China's per capita GDP and per capita GNI have exceeded the 12,000 US dollar mark.

The World Bank's multi-year development report shows that in general, the proportion of per capita income to per capita GDP in high-income countries is around 60%, and the proportion of final consumption expenditure (final consumption rate) to GDP is generally around 80%, while in developing countries it is generally above 70%.
