The Cantonese opera film "Lady Qiaoguo" was recently shown in Zhanjiang. The film showed Lady Xian's broad mind of "only using good intentions" and her patriotic feelings of protecting the well-being of the people throughout her life, which deeply moved the audience. On the day of the event, Sun Jinhua, deputy general manager of Zhujiang Film Group and chief producer of the film, and Zeng Xiaomin, director of Guangdong Cantonese Opera Theater and leading actor, came to the scene to communicate with the audience.
The Cantonese opera film "Lady Qiao" tells the story of "Lady Xian, the first Chinese heroine" who made outstanding contributions to maintaining national unity, promoting ethnic unity, and promoting the development of Lingnan. The film is rooted in tradition but not limited to tradition in its creation, allowing more young audiences to experience the enduring charm of Cantonese opera culture while understanding the legendary life of Lady Xian, who "spanned three dynasties and spread a good story". The film won the "Best Opera Film" award at the 36th China Film Golden Rooster Awards. After being released in theaters nationwide on July 5, it quickly achieved many good results, including the 2024 mainland opera film box office champion, the 2024 opera film audience champion, and the mainland film history opera film single-day total screening champion. It is still in theaters.
At the Zhanjiang roadshow, many audience members expressed their impressions. One audience member said, "As a movie lover, I was impressed by Cantonese opera movies like "Lady Qiao". I didn't expect that the two art forms of Cantonese opera and film could be integrated so well." He revealed that he lived in Techeng Island, Zhanjiang City, and was influenced by Lady Xian's culture since he was a child, which was also an important reason for him to support this movie.
Wen Ruqing, a national first-class actor from Wuchuan, played the leading male role Feng Bao in the film, which also made the audience in Zhanjiang feel particularly cordial and proud.
When the audience asked whether the film used AI technology, the chief producer Sun Jinhua replied that "Lady Qiao" did not use AI technology, but used movie special effects to integrate expression. He said that the "Cantonese opera film innovation trilogy" "Legend of the White Snake·Love", "Lady Qiao" and "Sanshui Daughter·Red Scarf" which is being prepared are actively exploring how to flexibly use new audio-visual technologies to show the unique charm of Cantonese opera films.
Lead actor Zeng Xiaomin said: "Nowadays, more and more young people are paying attention to traditional culture, which also makes us more clear about the direction of the inheritance and development of Cantonese opera culture."
"Lady Qiaoguo" is produced by Pearl River Film Group, co-produced by Guangdong Cantonese Opera House and Guangdong Zhuying Film and Television Production Co., Ltd., filmed by Guangdong Zhuying Film and Television Production Co., Ltd. and co-filmed by the Propaganda Department of the CPC Maoming Municipal Committee, directed by Xiao Feng, written by Wang Zhiwei, and Chen Jinrong is the Cantonese opera screenwriter. It is led by Zeng Xiaomin, a national first-class actor and winner of the Wenhua Performance Award and the Chinese Drama Plum Blossom Award, starring national first-class actor Wen Ruqing, and Peng Qinghua, a national first-class actor and Plum Blossom Award winner. Ding Fan, a winner of the Wenhua Performance Award and the Plum Blossom Award and a national intangible cultural heritage inheritor, is specially invited to star, and is co-starred by ten national first-class actors including the famous Cantonese opera performing artist Peng Chiquan.
