Bungie has been in all sorts of trouble since it was acquired by Sony, which took over the company after layoffs. However, it was revealed that the development of the Marathon reboot was not going smoothly.

According to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, Bungie is not optimistic about Marathon. The sci-fi shooting game was originally scheduled to be released in 2024, but has now been postponed to 2025. Some developers said that it may not even be completed before the new deadline.

“As far as I know, the development of Marathon is not optimistic. It was planned to be released this year, but now it has been delayed for a whole year. There is a reason for this.”

Marathon also lost its original director a few months ago. Additionally, the game is very different from what Bungie fans expected, which makes the project currently facing considerable challenges.

Bungie has been plagued by problems over the past few months. Sony laid off 17% of its staff to focus on restructuring and optimization, and PlayStation reportedly viewed Bungie as a failed acquisition.

Now that PlayStation has taken over the studio and will make most of the decisions, the turmoil puts Marathon at risk. Even if the game lives up to its promise, there's no guarantee it will be a critically acclaimed success.
