"Old Shanghai!" If you were to use an adjective to describe Shanghai in the early 1990s, what would be the first word that comes to your mind? Fashionable? Open? Reform?

At that time, Dutch photographer Robert van der Hilst traveled through the streets and alleys of Shanghai. Through his lens, he captured the prosperous scene of the city during this period and also told the traces of time belonging to the old city.

On August 8, Robert van der Hust’s solo exhibition “Shanghai: Moments and Eternities 1990-1993” was held at the Fotografiska Center for Image Art in Shanghai, taking the audience back to Shanghai in the 1990s.

In the early 1990s, Shanghai was facing a brand new transformation. Countless new things were rapidly changing the city’s landscape, people’s lives, and even the relationships between people.

Western society at that time was full of interest in the changing Shanghai. In April 1990, Vogue magazine (French edition) needed to shoot a cover story with the theme of "Shanghai City". Robert van der Hust came to Shanghai for the first time as a special photographer and recorded Shanghai in his eyes with a set of unusual photos.
