"Stand at ease, stand at attention, and salute!" A "soldier teacher" came to the primary school

"Stand at ease, salute! Turn left!" On the playground of Luwan No. 1 Central Primary School in Huangpu District, Shanghai, physical education teacher Lu Mingyang was conducting queue drills before physical education class. He walked into the students' queue and carefully corrected their movements. Afterwards, on the playground with cushions and benches, the students conducted an obstacle relay race, combining forward rolls and side rolls. The students ran hard and cheered for their teammates, and laughter was heard from time to time.
Lu Mingyang is one of the first batch of "soldier teachers" who graduated from the Shanghai Veterans College of Shanghai Normal University. His arrival not only brings full masculinity and interesting physical education classes to the campus, but also is a microcosm of the country's exploration of innovative "soldier teachers" systems in recent years.
The charm of "soldier teacher"
This year, Luwan No. 1 Central Primary School recruited two "soldier teachers" from the Shanghai Veterans College, one engaged in Chinese language education and the other engaged in physical education teaching.
Lu Mingyang, who became a physical education teacher at the beginning of this year, served as a guard during his military service from 2019 to 2021. After retiring, Lu Mingyang chose to apply for the physical education major at Shanghai Normal University Shanghai Veterans College, and chose physical education as his career direction.
Lu Mingyang's military experience has a great influence on his teaching. He said: "The fighting skills I learned in the army are now integrated into my teaching. I am designing a set of exercises suitable for primary school students, which are both interesting and can improve children's physical fitness. In addition, I will also integrate patriotism education and the excellent style of soldiers into my teaching philosophy."

In addition to being subject teachers, "soldier teachers" can also take on multiple roles in schools. Xu Jihong, vice principal of Luwan No. 1 Central Primary School, said that another "soldier teacher" who is engaged in Chinese language education was responsible for shooting the school's national security video, enriching the school's ideological and political education content.
"During the teaching activities, the two male teachers showed masculinity." Xu Jihong said, "These retired military teachers not only have the intimacy of older brothers, but also the strictness unique to soldiers, and can guide and educate students very well."
The school's new teaching initiative of introducing "soldier teachers" has also been well received by parents and students. One parent said: "The soldiers are strict with their children but also show love and care, which makes us feel relieved."
Win-win training model
On January 11, 2022, the Shanghai Veterans College was established at Shanghai Normal University. It aims to implement the requirements of the state's "Opinions on Promoting Outstanding Veterans to Teach in Primary and Secondary Schools" and "Overall Plan for Deepening Education Evaluation Reform in the New Era". It will implement undergraduate and graduate education for veterans who are interested in teaching, and focus on training a group of "soldier teachers" who are "specialized in one field and have multiple skills" to meet the development needs of the country's primary and secondary school and kindergarten teacher staff, so as to further broaden the employment channels for veterans and strengthen the construction of the primary and secondary school teacher team.
It is understood that the Shanghai Veterans College is the first veterans college in the country approved by the Ministry of Veterans Affairs and the Ministry of Education. It is also the only college that currently provides full-time academic education and trains veteran teachers at the undergraduate, master's and doctoral levels.
"The original intention of the college is to train outstanding veterans to teach in primary and secondary schools, and to bring the masculinity and spirit of hard work of veterans to primary and secondary school students. The successful practice of veteran teachers in Shanghai primary schools not only injects new vitality into education, but also provides a new path for the career development of veterans." Meng Shengyi, head of student affairs at the Shanghai Veterans College of Shanghai Normal University, introduced that the college adopts a "three-guides-in-a-lifetime" training model, including national defense mentors, primary and secondary school teaching mentors, and academic mentors, to ensure that students are comprehensively trained in both professional skills and national defense literacy.
Shanghai Veterans College has adopted a diversified training model for students, striving to enable students to achieve multi-skills and multi-professional integrated development. With the goal of "building the military spirit and educating the teacher spirit", the college actively carries out the construction of special teaching materials such as patriotism education, national security education, emergency management, and drone education, and promotes high-quality employment for students by carrying out multi-skill vocational training camps.
Meng Shengyi said that in the future, the college will further strengthen its cooperation with primary and secondary schools and open more teacher education majors based on actual needs to meet the needs of primary and secondary schools for teachers of different subjects.
