In July this year, more than 100 villages in Pinggu District, Beijing, became creative practice sites for 1,193 college students.
From mistaking walnuts on the tree for apples at first, to becoming familiar with the habits of various crops and designing IPs for garlic and peppers in the village, "Suan Le La"; from being "socially fearful" at first, to becoming a "social bull" who can sell peaches in the village live broadcast and perform confidently in the village evening show; from thinking that it was just a farm stay at first, to being fully trusted later, to designing a "food court" plan for the village that matches the homestay...
In 30 days, college students from 62 universities solved a number of real problems for more than 200 villages with different "temperaments" in Pinggu District. Some of the problems were small, but they were a real practice of stepping out of the ivory tower.
Pinggu District, which is focusing on science and technology + agriculture, is full of desire for young talents. This year is the second year that the district has held the "Thousand People and Hundred Villages" summer social practice activity for college students.
According to Shen Haobin, deputy director of the Organization Department of the Pinggu District Committee of Beijing, this year the district has deeply explored and accurately matched the needs of the school and the local area, and used the "project system" to promote social practice to be more targeted and effective. A total of more than 220 projects have been collected, covering economic development, grassroots governance, environmental improvement, cultural and tourism innovation and other aspects.
Going into the countryside, the knowledge in the books is down-to-earth
Before coming to Pinggu, Fu Jing, a first-year master's student in accounting at Northeast Forestry University, did a lot of homework. With the demand of "developing the forest economy" previously proposed by Pinggu District, she and her teammates went to Wanggezhuang Village, Machangying Town, Pinggu District.
Under the guidance of the village cadres, Fu Jing and her team members investigated the local climate, forest farms and cash crop growth. After preliminary investigations and visits, combined with the research results of Northeast Agricultural University, Fu Jing and her team selected some forest cash crops suitable for local planting as an option for the village to develop forest economy. "It was only when we entered the countryside that we really made the book knowledge grounded," said Fu Jing.
Not all practice teams have clear tasks before "entering the village". Before arriving in Taopeng Village, Shandongzhuang Town, Pinggu District, several graduate students from the Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Opera were ready to work in the fields. After arriving in Taopeng Village, they found that the main industry there was tourism.
After the visit, they learned that the first party branch in Pinggu was born in Taopeng Village. During the Anti-Japanese War, the people in this area actively participated in the anti-Japanese war, leaving behind many anti-Japanese relics and remains.
"Some anti-Japanese stories and ballads rely on word of mouth from the older generation. If the older generation passes away, how will these stories be passed on?" said Zhang Yu, a second-year graduate student in the Directing Department of the Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Opera. Previously, the village had organized personnel to discover and record the red song scores. During the practice, Zhang Yu and his classmates sorted out the materials, composed and recorded some of the scores, and completed the singing and mixing and MV shooting.
They also plan to create a Peking Opera story around the establishment process of the first party branch in Pinggu, so that more people can understand Pinggu’s history of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and its cultural heritage.
Bringing vitality to the countryside and nurturing creative sparks
In the eyes of many college students, rural areas have unlimited development potential and they have put forward various creative ideas.
Wang Shuo, a junior student majoring in brewing engineering at Beijing University of Technology and Business, came to Dahuashan Town, known as the No. 1 peach town in Pinggu, with his small goal in mind - can he make peach wine from those peaches of poor quality?
His idea was supported. The person in charge of Dahuashan Town believed that brewing peach wine could further extend the industrial chain of Pinggu peaches and enrich the big peach industry. He contacted a local winery for the five-member team and provided them with a brewing site.
The team chose yellow peach as the wine variety, and combined the expertise of the team members to design the taste, aroma, nutritional content, etc., and produced samples. Wang Shuo brought the team's newly brewed yellow peach wine to the Pinggu District to hold a defense meeting for the college students who participated in this practice, and asked the judges to taste it.
Two teams from the Beijing Film Academy joined forces to write and direct a light comedy short film, "The Great Trouble in Peach Valley". This short film uses humorous language and humorous editing to tell the story of a blogger who traveled to the Heavenly Palace Peach Festival during a live broadcast to recommend Pinggu peaches.
Zhang Chuhan, a freshman majoring in art and technology at the school's School of Sound, said that the students in both teams were not professional directors or actors. In order to make this short film well, everyone took on multiple roles, learned temporarily, and invited villagers to support the filming. The cadres of Daxingzhuang Town supported the students' creativity and provided filming venues and funds.
Wang Yan, a sophomore student majoring in tourism management at the School of Liberal Arts and Urban-Rural Development of Beijing Agricultural College, is a native of Beidulehe Village, Nandulehe Town, Pinggu. He wants to truly understand and empower his hometown through this practical activity.
He and his classmates proposed the idea of creating an IP image for Beidulehe Village based on local development needs. Wang Yan said: "A big problem with rural products is that there is no brand effect. We need to create such a brand image, empower it with culture, and give it brand value, so that it can sell better and go further."
Finally, they designed a garlic-based IP called "Suan Le La". Wang Yan said: "This name combines the name of Beidulehe Village, garlic and chili, the local specialty economic crops, and also plays with homophonic puns, which we all find very interesting."
Jia Jingyu, the organizing committee member of Nandulehe Township, is the "township know-it-all" of the Beijing Agricultural College team - students call him at any time when they have new ideas or new problems. In his opinion, students "bring all kinds of information from the city and bring fresh blood to the countryside. Their ideas are also very bold and practical."
30 days is short, thousands of people have gained a lot
In Yuzishan Village, Shandongzhuang Town, Pinggu District, an art gallery transformed from an idle substation has become a popular check-in spot, adding a touch of literary and artistic color to the rural roads. This art gallery is the result of college students' participation in social practice last year.
After being renovated by the School of Art and Design of Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, the Pinggu Power Station Art Museum, formed by the cooperation of the three parties of "government, school and village", has held art exhibitions, resident artist creations, course research, parent-child teaching and other activities. At the same time, the art museum explores the integrated development of multiple formats of "coffee + exhibition + event + salon + N", integrating rural atmosphere with artistic life, and connecting the "cultural tourism line" that combines agriculture, culture, tourism and rural characteristics.
This year, with the development of practical activities, more and more such school-local cooperation projects will be implemented in Pinggu.
In Dalinghou Village, Xiagezhuang Town, a food plaza is being planned. This is a proposal brought by college students from China Agricultural University.
In the context of the coordinated development of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, Dalinghou Village, located at the junction of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, is actively developing cultural tourism industry cooperation projects such as parent-child camping, high-end homestays, leisure dining, and outdoor experiences. When students from China Agricultural University came to Dalinghou Village, the village party branch secretary gave them a question - how to retain tourists and let them stay in Dalinghou Village for one night?
"After investigation, we found that Dalinghou Village has beautiful scenery and many high-end and high-quality homestays, but there is no catering. This has also become one of the important reasons why many tourists are reluctant to stay overnight," said Cheng Shaonan from China Agricultural University.
After conducting research and receiving guidance from their school teachers, these college students came up with the answer – to build a food resort.
This idea was supported by the Dalinghou Village Committee. After Chen Libin, the Party Secretary of Dalinghou Village, reported the project to the higher authorities, it was also affirmed. Soon a bank was willing to cooperate with Dalinghou Village and would provide a loan of 5 million yuan for the construction of the food court.
"We value college students and hope to establish longer-term cooperation with the universities behind them in the future, forming a 'golden triangle' model in which Pinggu provides the platform, enterprises invest, and universities provide intellectual support, to help Pinggu's agricultural Zhongguancun construction and rural revitalization." said Liu Lamei, head of the Organization Department of Machangying Town, Pinggu District, Beijing.
Many practice teams cannot do without the support of their universities. Today, the plan to develop forest economy proposed by Fu Jing's team has been taken seriously by Northeast Agricultural University. On July 8, teachers from the school came from Harbin to Pinggu for docking, and plan to introduce advanced technology to promote agricultural development in the next step. The peach wine developed by Wang Shuo's team has also been supported by Beijing Technology and Business University, and plans to cooperate with enterprises in the next step to expand the industry.
Di Tao, deputy secretary of the Pinggu District Committee of Beijing and district mayor, said that Pinggu's construction of the Agricultural Zhongguancun is to give full play to Beijing's advantages in the concentration of educational and scientific and technological talents and transform the potential energy of resources into kinetic energy for development. The "Thousand People and Hundred Villages" summer social practice activity for college students is a specific measure for education to help Pinggu build the Agricultural Zhongguancun, and it is also a practical exploration to deepen the integrated reform of the educational and scientific and technological talent system and mechanism.
