Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Japan's continued discharge of nuclear contaminated water is extremely irresponsible

On August 7, Japan's Tokyo Electric Power Company started discharging the eighth batch of Fukushima nuclear contaminated water into the sea, which is expected to last until August 25, with a planned discharge of about 7,800 tons of nuclear contaminated water.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning said that China's position of opposing Japan's unilateral discharge of nuclear contaminated water into the ocean has not changed. The discharge of nuclear contaminated water from Fukushima into the sea concerns the health of all mankind, the global marine environment, and the international public interest, and is by no means a private matter of Japan. Japan has not yet addressed the concerns of the international community on the safety of nuclear contaminated water discharge into the sea, the long-term reliability of purification equipment, and the effectiveness of monitoring arrangements. It is extremely irresponsible to continue to discharge nuclear contaminated water into the ocean and pass on potential pollution risks to the whole world. China has expressed its concerns to Japan on many occasions and has had in-depth communication with Japan.

We urge Japan to fully cooperate in establishing an independent, effective, and long-term international monitoring arrangement with substantial participation of neighboring countries and other stakeholders.
