On August 6, local time, the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) issued a statement saying that Yahya Sinwar replaced Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated a few days ago, as the leader of Hamas's Political Bureau.

Hamas later emphasized in a statement that the organization decided to choose Yahya Sinwar as the leader of its Political Bureau after "in-depth and extensive consultations and deliberations" within its leadership body. This choice reflects Hamas' confidence in Sinwar in "a sensitive period and a complex regional and international situation."

Yahya Sinwar was born in a refugee camp in Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip in 1962. He is one of the main founders of Hamas' security agency. He has been the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip since 2017 and is considered by the outside world to be a representative of the "hardliners" within Hamas. He is regarded by Israel as one of the masterminds of Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7 last year.

Sinwar was convicted by Israel in 1988 for the killing of two Israeli soldiers and was imprisoned for more than 20 years. In 2011, Sinwar was released as part of a prisoner exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas.

Hamas confirmed on July 31 that Hamas Political Bureau leader Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli air strike at his residence in Tehran, the Iranian capital, early that morning.
