IT Home reported on August 5 that Apple added "digital ID" support to the iPhone Wallet app in the 2021 iOS 15 system. Supported US residents can add their driver's license or state ID card to the iPhone and Apple Watch Wallet app. However, as of now, only Arizona, Maryland, Ohio, and Colorado officially support related features.

Today the California Department of Revenue announced that they are conducting a series of tests.Plans to support Apple Wallet app digital ID function in the near futureHowever, the California Department of Revenue said that the relevant wallet ID card is designed as a companion to the actual driver’s license or ID card, not a replacement. Users must continue to carry their physical driver’s license or ID card with them, and the ID card in the iPhone device wallet can only be used in TSA checkpoint scenarios such as airports.

IT Home learned that Apple officially claimed that the company's wallet application "digital ID card" is more private, and the relevant information is said to be protected by the bottom-level security. For example, if a user wants to show his or her ID as proof of age, the wallet application will only tell the identification party that "the user is an adult", but will not disclose the user's specific age information.
