Although there are five types of calligraphy, in daily use, the popularity of regular script, cursive script, seal script and official script is far less than that of regular script. This is because they are too easy to recognize and difficult to write, and it is difficult for ordinary people without calligraphy skills to master them. However, the regular script is a font that can be appreciated by both insiders and outsiders for its unique beauty.

Small regular script, a large category of regular script, is even more popular among the people because it has two significant advantages over regular script. First, small regular script not only has the rigorous brushwork of regular script, but also tests the calligrapher's skills. To be able to write a character that is only one or two centimeters in size with "all the organs" requires excellent pen control. Second, small regular script is more delicate and gentle, avoiding the stiffness caused by being too rigid.

There are many famous calligraphers in the history of calligraphy, such as Zhong Yao, Er Wang, Zhao Mengfu, Wen Zhengming, Wu Yuru, etc. They also left many classic works. The best small calligraphy in the world", but it was created by someone less famous than them, who isZhong Shaojing

Zhong Shaojing, also known by his courtesy name Keda, was born in Gan County, Qianzhou (now Xingguo, Jiangxi) in 659 AD during the fourth year of Tang Xianqing. He was the seventeenth-generation grandson of Zhong Yao, the "founder of regular script". He inherited his family's knowledge since childhood and was admitted to the Fengge Pavilion because of his excellent calligraphy. He was highly appreciated by Emperor Gaozong of Tang and Empress Wu Zetian. Historical records show that the Mingtang gate plaque, the inscriptions on the Nine Cauldrons, and the palace gate plaques were all written by him.

Zhong Shaojing's small regular script integrates the essence of various calligraphers from the Jin and Tang dynasties. He combined the brushwork of Zhong Yao, Wang Xizhi, Wang Xianzhi, Yu Shinan, and Chu Suiliang to form a vigorous, varied, beautiful and natural style. He is known as Zhong Yao, his ancestor, and later generations call him "Little Zhong". Zeng Gong, a writer in the Song Dynasty, commented on him: "Shaojing's calligraphy is beautiful, vigorous and methodical, and few can compare with him." In other words, few people in history can surpass him in calligraphy.

The Lingfeijing is Zhong Shaojing's most classic work and an important source of Zhao Mengfu and Qi Gong's regular script.Dong Qichang believed that "Zhao Wenmin's regular script is the ancestor of Zhong Shaojing, and he only learned three or four of his skills." He became a master of his generation by only learning three or four of Zhong Shaojing's skills. The strokes of "Lingfei Jing" are vigorous and stretched, with rich rules, natural strokes, and twists and turns at the turning points. The characters are dignified and slightly tilted, with both the uprightness and peace of the Wei and Jin dynasties and the rigor of the Tang dynasty.

This work was once pawned by Dong Qichang to his good friend Chen Li. Sixteen years later, Dong redeemed it, and Chen Li secretly cut off forty-three lines and kept them as a secret. Later, Dong Qichang lost the original work, and these forty-three lines became the only copy, with a total of 685 characters. It was brought to the United States by Weng Wange, the grandson of Weng Tonghe, and is now kept in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
