During the Three Kingdoms period, many heroes emerged and many familiar figures appeared. Today, let us appreciate the calligraphy of Zhuge Liang, Zhang Fei and Cao Cao.

Zhuge Liang

Zhuge Liang's calligraphy

It is said that Yuan She Tie was copied by Wang Xizhi from Zhuge Liang. As Kong Ming's calligraphy, Yuan She Tie has been revered since it appeared in the Northern Song Dynasty. Volume 13 of Xuanhe Calligraphy Collection, "On Cursive Script", says: Since the Han, Jin and Song Dynasties, many people have become famous for their cursive scripts. Let's take the 65 people who have been handed down to the present day and rank them according to their generations. Zhang Zhi was in the Han Dynasty, and Zhuge Liang was in Shu. Liang was good at painting and also liked to write cursive characters. Although he was not famous for his calligraphy, people who got his relics would definitely treasure them. The cursive script in the Imperial Palace today is Yuan She Tie.

Cao Cao

Cao Cao's calligraphy

Cao Cao's "Gunxue" is the first of the thirteen Baogu Cliff Carvings, written in large Han Li characters. The stone carving was originally located at Baogukou, an important pass at the southern end of the Baoxiang Plank Road, on a huge stone in the Baoshui River. The overall shape of the cliff carving is rectangular, 148 cm wide, 67 cm high, and the diameter of the characters is 35~46 cm. It is now in the collection of the Hanzhong Museum in Shaanxi Province.

Judging from the art of calligraphy, the character "衮" stirs up waves with a sense of dynamics; the character "雪" is comfortable and quiet, with a static texture, both in form and spirit, and embodies the calligrapher's ambition and passion to set things right. His calligraphy not only shows the style characteristics of the same era as the "Cao Quan Tablet", "the handwriting is elegant and beautiful, the structure is flat and symmetrical, the strokes are stretched and elegant, the style is graceful, the strokes are straight and long and short", but also has the square style of regular script, showing a rare kind of vigor and strength; the heroic spirit of movement and stillness!

Three rubbings of "Inscription on Mount Bameng" (legend) (the latter two are suspected to be forged in the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China)

Around the same time in the Ming Dynasty, another cliff inscription was discovered in Liujiang County, Sichuan. This is the so-called "Zhang Fei Riding on a Horse Inscription", also known as "Bameng Cliff Inscription", which was recorded in the Ming Dynasty books such as "Taiping Qinghua" by Chen Jiru. The inscription reads: "Han General Fei, led 10,000 elite soldiers, defeated the bandit leader Zhang He in Bameng, and carved this inscription while riding on a horse."
