On August 5, The Paper learned from Shanghai Jiao Tong University that Mr. Tsung-Dao Lee, Nobel Prize winner in Physics, Chinese-American physicist, foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, lifelong director of the China Advanced Science and Technology Center, honorary professor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and honorary director of the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, died at 2:33 a.m. local time on August 4, 2024 at his home in San Francisco, USA, at the age of 97.

Mr. Tsung-Dao Lee, a world-renowned scientist, Nobel Prize winner in physics, Chinese-American physicist, foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, member of the Third World Academy of Sciences, member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, member of the Italian National Academy of Sciences, lifelong director of the China Advanced Center for Science and Technology, honorary professor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and honorary director of the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, died at 2:33 a.m. on August 4, 2024, local time, at his home in San Francisco, USA, at the age of 97.

As one of the physics masters who pioneered the history of Chinese people winning the Nobel Prize, Mr. Tsung-Dao Lee was rigorous in his academic career of more than 60 years. He strived for breakthroughs in many fields such as quantum field theory, elementary particle theory, nuclear physics, statistical mechanics, fluid mechanics, astrophysics, etc., constantly climbed to the top of science, sought truth and facts, and made lasting and clear contributions to the development of physics.

As a Chinese who promoted the development of China's science and technology education, Mr. Tsung-Dao Lee, with his ardent love for the motherland and his strong desire to serve the country, used his outstanding vision as an outstanding scientist to vigorously promote the development of China's high-energy physics around the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider; he facilitated the establishment of the "Junior Class" of the University of Science and Technology of China, the establishment of CUSPEA (China-US Joint Recruitment Program for Physics Graduates), suggested the establishment of postdoctoral and National Natural Science Foundation systems, the establishment of the China Center for Advanced Science and Technology, and the establishment of the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute, promoting China's basic research to focus on fundamental scientific issues. He has made important contributions to the development of China's science and technology education and talent cultivation.

As a wise messenger advocating the integration of science and art, Mr. Tsung-Dao Lee personally practiced and collaborated with many top Chinese artists to integrate scientific ideas into artistic creation, leaving behind many masterpieces with rich connotations and lasting meanings. He wrote an immortal legendary chapter with his nearly 100-year life in physics. His brilliant achievements in the field of physics and his selfless dedication to the future of science in the motherland will be recorded in the annals of science forever; his scientific spirit of being indifferent to fame and fortune and pursuing far-sightedness will always inspire generations of Chinese scientists and students to work tirelessly and create new glory for Chinese science and technology.
