Nvidia, the leader in AI (artificial intelligence) chips, responded to rumors of delayed launch of AI chips.

On August 4, in response to the news that Nvidia's AI chip was delayed, Nvidia responded to reporters: "As we have said before, demand for Hopper is very strong, Blackwell sample trials have begun widely, and production is expected to increase in the second half of the year. Beyond that, we do not comment on rumors."

Recently, foreign media reported that design flaws in Nvidia's AI chips may cause the release to be delayed by three months or more, affecting major customers such as Meta, Google and Microsoft, which have ordered chips worth tens of billions of dollars.

The launch of Nvidia’s new AI chip, Blackwell, will be delayed by three months or more due to a “design flaw,” according to two people familiar with the matter who “help produce Nvidia’s new AI chip and server hardware.”

Another source said that Nvidia notified Microsoft and another large cloud computing provider this week that its new Blackwell chip would be delayed.

However, Morgan Stanley expressed an optimistic view in its latest report, believing that the production of Blackwell chips will only be suspended for about two weeks and can catch up with the progress in the fourth quarter of 2024 through TSMC's efforts.

NVIDIA currently upgrades its GPU architecture at an average frequency of every two years, significantly improving product performance. NVIDIA released the H100 accelerator card based on the Hopper architecture in 2022. In March this year, it launched the "Blackwell" chip series, and the first Blackwell chip was named B200. The series will be mass-produced later this year.

The new processor, the B200, combines two pieces of silicon about the same size as the company’s previous products and can handle certain AI-related tasks (such as providing chatbot answers) 30 times faster than its predecessor. Each B200 chip is priced between $30,000 and $40,000, according to the company.

In addition to delayed product delivery, foreign media reported that the U.S. Department of Justice may launch an antitrust investigation into Nvidia, mainly involving a merger and acquisition case and Nvidia's business practices. The investigation was mainly due to complaints from Nvidia's competitors that Nvidia may abuse its market dominance when selling AI chips and "force" cloud computing suppliers to buy multiple Nvidia products.

The Justice Department is also investigating whether Nvidia raises the price of its networking equipment for customers who want to buy AI chips from rivals such as Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

In addition, a merger and acquisition by Nvidia has also attracted the attention of the Department of Justice. It is reported that lawyers from the US Department of Justice are investigating Nvidia's acquisition of Israeli AI startup Run:ai on antitrust grounds. The two companies announced the deal at the end of April this year, but did not disclose the price. However, foreign media reported that the transaction amount was US$700 million.

On August 2, local time, Nvidia's stock price fell 1.78% to close at $107.27 per share, with a total market value of $2.64 trillion. According to Wind data, Nvidia's stock price has risen 116.64% since the beginning of this year.
