Avocado is recalling approximately 55,480 organic cotton mattress protectors because they violate federal flammability regulations, specifically cigarette ignition resistance. The mattresses may pose a fire hazard, but no injuries have been reported.

According to the CPSC, the affected mattress protectors were sold in Avocado stores or online between January 2019 and March 2024. The recall covers all sizes, from twin to California king, as well as standard and deep pocket styles.

If you think your mattress pad may be recalled, check the label that came with it. The label will have the brand, production date, fiber composition and model number. The model number of the recalled mattress pad is SFMPAVORG.

The good news is that Avocado will replace the mattress pads with new ones that comply with federal regulations, free of charge to consumers. According to the recall page, the replacement mattress pads are GOTS certified and are of the same quality as the original pads.

You cannot get a replacement at a retail location. You must do so online through Avocado's recall form.

To get a replacement, you need to follow the steps below.

  • First, visit the avocado recall page and register online using the form.
  • Use a marker to write the date, your initials, and “Recall” on the mat.
  • Cut the mattress pad in half.
  • Take a photo of the mattress pad cut in half with the message written on it.
  • Upload your photo into the form and claim your confirmation page.

According to the recall page, replacement mattress pads should be shipped within 2-3 weeks. For further questions, please contact Avocado by calling 844-326-5009 or emailing [email protected].

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a mattress brand fail fire regulations; the Ghost Bed and Nap Queen have both had recalls this year.
