RSHP, in collaboration with the Architectural Design Institute of Tongji University, has won the competition for the second phase of the Zhongyuan International Convention and Exhibition Center complex.

The project is developed by Henan Airport Construction and Development Co., Ltd. and is located in Zhengzhou Airport Economic Experimental Zone (ZAEZ), close to Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport. This superior geographical location ensures a well-connected domestic and international transportation infrastructure, giving it an inherent advantage in hosting national and even global conferences and exhibitions.

The Zhongyuan International Convention and Exhibition Center and Conference Center complex will serve as the main venue for the 3rd National Vocational Skills Competition in 2025. The project design aims to create an international landmark exhibition venue, and the building complex is highly recognizable and visible from both land and air perspectives.

While the design reflects ZAEZ’s desire to create contemporary and innovative architecture, its ambitious rooftop ‘wings’ also reflect the region’s rich cultural heritage and spectacular natural beauty.

The Phase II project of the Convention and Exhibition Center extends along the east and west sides of the central green space and is located in the south of the Phase I of the Convention and Exhibition Center. The design includes three key parts: the Phase II of the Convention and Exhibition Center, the conference center and the supporting hotel.

Networking and modularization are the starting points of the design. A 1.7-kilometer-long elevated central spine connects the three registration halls, exhibition halls, conference center and supporting hotels, creating an interconnected network layout.

The design emphasizes pedestrian-friendliness and publicness, and the upper and lower layers of the central corridor distinguish the traffic lines for fast and slow traffic, exhibitions, and catering.

The exhibition center has 16 exhibition halls and related facilities, distributed on both sides of the central spine. The net area of each standard exhibition hall is about 12,500 square meters, and the net exhibition hall size on the first floor is 78.5 meters × 161 meters, which can meet the needs of different exhibitions and activities.

The upper level of the central spine crosses the park through the East Login Hall, connecting the exhibition center to the magnificent conference center and its adjacent supporting hotel. The conference center is mainly covered by a spectacular suspended roof above the main conference hall and banquet hall. The large cable net curtain wall makes the internal functions clear and transparent, and has good spatial readability. The hotel, located at the easternmost end of the complex, completes the overall design vision with its unique roof design and large atrium.

The lower levels of the central spine house dining, commercial and public event spaces where visitors and exhibitors can dine, relax and enjoy the comfortable scale of the building and landscape.

Three impressive sign-in halls for ticket checking, security and other functions are located at the east, middle and west ends of the central spine, and can be connected to the exhibition halls through the upper and lower levels. After passing the security check, visitors can use the moving walkway on the upper level of the spine to quickly reach the target exhibition hall area. The entrance to the exhibition area is set at the mezzanine level of the exhibition hall. Before taking the escalator to the first floor exhibition area, visitors can enjoy the spectacular view of the exhibition space below.

The project will also be designed in accordance with China's green building requirements. It is planned to install photovoltaic panels on the roof of the main login hall, introduce natural lighting in the exhibition hall, and a rainwater collection system for landscape irrigation, which will promote and confirm the use of passive sustainable systems.

The second phase of the exhibition covers an area of about 925 mu, with a total construction area of about 527,000 square meters. The conference center and hotel cover an area of about 122 mu, with a total construction area of about 200,000 square meters.
