Apple today updated its App Store guidelines for developers, changing its rules for emulators to include explicit permission for PC emulators to download games.

Guideline 4.7 has been updated to state that PC emulator apps can offer downloadable games. The guideline previously stated that console emulator apps could include the option to download games, but did not explicitly cover PC emulators.

The rule change comes after the App Store approved PC emulator UTM SE, which allows users to emulate older versions of Windows, macOS, and Linux to use classic software and games.

Apple initially rejected UTM SE in June, even though it had begun allowing retro game emulators back in April.

UTM SE was the first PC emulator app to be approved for sale on the App Store, but today's guideline changes will streamline the approval process for similar apps.
