BEIRUT, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Hezbollah fired dozens of Katyusha rockets at military bases and Jewish settlements in northern Israel in response to Israel's air strikes on the southern Lebanese village of Shema earlier that day, according to a report by Lebanon's Lighthouse TV station under Hezbollah on the 1st.

Reports say an Israeli airstrike on Shema killed a Syrian woman and three children.

A Lebanese military source told Xinhua News Agency that according to the Lebanese army's monitoring, about 70 rockets were fired at Israel from the Lebanese side in two batches that day, some of which were intercepted by Israel's "Iron Dome" air defense system.

The source also said that Israeli aircraft launched seven attacks on seven towns and villages in eastern, central and western Lebanon that day. Israeli artillery fired 45 shells at 11 towns and villages in Lebanon, causing serious damage to dozens of houses and causing multiple fires.

On July 27, the Israeli-controlled town of Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights was attacked by rockets, killing at least 12 people and injuring more than 30. Israel said it was the work of Hezbollah in Lebanon and decided to launch a retaliatory strike against it for several days. Hezbollah in Lebanon denied any involvement in the attack.

On July 30, Israel launched an airstrike on a Hezbollah target in the southern suburbs of Beirut, killing Fuad Shukur, a senior military commander of Hezbollah, and five civilians, and injuring 74 others. On August 1, Hezbollah leader Nasrallah vowed revenge at Shukur's funeral.

Since the outbreak of a new round of Israeli-Palestinian conflict on October 7 last year, Hezbollah in Lebanon has launched attacks on northern Israel and the Golan Heights from time to time, and the Israeli army has retaliated with air strikes and artillery shelling of targets in southern Lebanon. The conflict between the two sides on the Lebanese-Israeli border continues to this day, and a large number of residents in the southern Lebanese and northern Israeli border areas have been evacuated.
