Cairo, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Khartoum: Sudan's armed forces issued a statement on July 31 saying that Burhan, chairman of Sudan's Sovereignty Council and commander-in-chief of the armed forces, was attacked by a drone while attending a graduation ceremony of a military academy at a military base in eastern Sudan. Burhan survived the attack, which left five people dead and several others slightly injured.

The statement said two drones attacked the Jebet military base in Sudan's eastern Red Sea state, targeting a military academy graduation ceremony, and the Sudanese Armed Forces intercepted them using ground-based air defense weapons.

At present, no organization or individual has claimed responsibility for the attack.

This is the first drone attack in the state since the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Sudan Rapid Support Forces in April last year.

On April 15, 2023, an armed conflict broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Sudan Rapid Support Forces in the capital Khartoum, and the fighting subsequently spread to other areas. The ongoing conflict has killed about 18,700 people in Sudan and displaced more than 9.4 million people.
