On July 31, the well-known data research company Canalys officially released the global smartphone shipment report for the second quarter of 2024. The report shows that in the past Q2, global smartphone shipments reached 288.9 million units, a year-on-year increase of 12%, which is the third consecutive quarter of year-on-year growth.

However, this quarter was a mixed bag, because compared to the first quarter, the global smartphone landscape has changed dramatically, especially the top five brands. Information shows that Samsung still ranks first, with a total shipment of 53.5 million units and a market share of 19%, a year-on-year increase of 1%. Apple ranked second, with shipments of 45.6 million units and a market share of 16%, a year-on-year increase of 6%. Xiaomi ranked third, with shipments of 4.23 million units and a market share of 15%, a year-on-year increase of 27%. Vivo ranked fourth, with shipments of 25.9 million units and a market share of 9%, a year-on-year increase of 19%. Transsion ranked fifth, with shipments of 25.5 million units and a market share of 9%, a year-on-year increase of 12%.

From the overall ranking, we can see that vivo has returned to the top five in the world after falling out of the top five in the first quarter, and has surpassed Transsion to rank fourth. The familiar OPPO was directly squeezed out of the top five in the world, and it must be ranked sixth, but the report only gives the top five rankings and shipments in the world. We don’t know OPPO’s overall shipments, market share, and year-on-year growth. In other words, the competition between the last two is very fierce, and the top three have not changed. However, Xiaomi gave everyone a surprise. It is not only ranked third in the world, but also the number one domestic brand, and the shipment gap between it and Apple is getting smaller and smaller.

Although the top five brands are all growing year-on-year, Xiaomi has the largest growth rate, up to 27%. With a little more effort, it can surpass Apple, but of course it will take time to surpass Apple as a whole. After all, Apple's Q4 shipments are amazing every year.
