IT Home reported on July 31 that Samsung usually targets young people and emphasizes the fashion and entertainment functions of the Galaxy Z Flip series. However, recently the company unexpectedly positioned its product as a police tool.

IT Home noticed that in a post titled "Samsung technology is helping police authorities protect public safety" on Samsung's newsroom, Samsung said that two police departments in Missouri participated in a pilot project to integrate Z Flip into daily law enforcement work. This is the first time a foldable phone has been used as a police law enforcement cameraSubsequently, two more police departments joined the project.

To adapt to police needs, Samsung worked with a professional law enforcement equipment supplier called Visual Labs to customize the phone. These include remapping the external volume button as an emergency recording start button, and automatically starting recording when a vehicle is chasing or the police lights are on.The recorded videos can be instantly uploaded to the cloud via Visual Labs’ software.

Samsung said that the folding design of the Z Flip series of mobile phones makes it easy to carry and fix on police uniforms, which can clearly record arrests and other interactive details, improve evidence collection and transparency. In addition to being a law enforcement recorder, it can also be used to shoot crime scene evidence, record evidence, and locate police officers through GPS.

Currently, this solution has been extended to 25 urban police departments in five states. Samsung said it will continue to provide relevant tools to more American police departments. Visual Labs also cooperated with T-Mobile to provide Android smartphone body camera solutions for law enforcement agencies.

It is worth noting that the US law enforcement camera market is still dominated by companies such as Axon and Motorola.
