Apple today released new beta versions of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 for developers, introducing AI features for the first time. Apple Intelligence was previewed in June and is Apple's version of artificial intelligence.

While not all Apple Intelligence features are available yet, we have listed the active features in the beta. Note that iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 are currently available to developers only and will be available to all users in beta form this fall.

Apple Intelligence is still in its early stages of development, and Apple is working out bugs and honing new features before launching them. Apple Intelligence will continue to improve over time, and features missing from the developer beta will be available later this year.

Writing Tools

  • Proofread your text for spelling and grammar errors, including word choice and sentence structure. You can accept all suggestions with one tap, or review and explain them one by one.

  • Rewrites are used to clean up what you've written and change the tone without affecting the content. Options include Friendly, Professional, and Concise.

  • Choose between options for text and summary. You can choose to create paragraphs, extract key points, make a list, or create a table. Summary can be used for emails, messages, etc.

You can select any text on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac and access writing tools using Apple Intelligence for summaries and other features.

Siri

  • When you activate Siri, a newly designed glow appears around the edge of the display for iPhone, iPad, and CarPlay. On Mac, the Siri window can be placed anywhere. The glow changes with your voice, so you know Siri is listening without interrupting other things you’re doing.

  • Double-tapping the bottom of the display brings up the Type to Siri interface so you can type your request instead of speaking it. If this doesn't work, you may need to restart. On a Mac, you need to press the Command key twice to open the Type to Siri interface. Type to Siri includes suggested requests so you can get answers to questions faster.

  • Siri can maintain context between requests, so you can ask a question and then refer back to it in a second response. For example, if you ask about the temperature in Orlando and then follow up with "What's the humidity?" Siri will know you meant Orlando.

  • If you stumble over your words or change the subject mid-conversation with Siri, Siri can keep up.

  • Armed with Apple's product knowledge and support library, Siri can answer questions about device features and settings, and can even find a setting if you don't know its exact name.

mail

  • The Summary button summarizes any email you receive, and you'll see a brief summary of the email in your inbox list instead of the first few lines of the email.

  • When appropriate, Mail will surface time-sensitive messages first, bringing them to the top of your inbox so you see the important ones right away.

  • Smart Reply provides quick, tap-based responses to emails sent to you, providing contextual options based on the email content.

  • Multiple notifications from Mail will be grouped together on the lock screen so you can read the contents of your email without opening the app.

information

  • Messages has a smart reply option that analyses the content of incoming text messages and offers suggestions on what you might want to say.

  • Multiple message notifications are grouped together on the lock screen.

photo

  • Just a simple description like "My cat in 2024" or "Orlando in the summer" is all it takes to create a Memory Movie. The feature automatically picks out relevant photos and songs, but you can also tweak it with the Memory Remix feature or choose a mood to guide the direction of the audio. When creating a cue, you can also add specific scenes and images you'd like to see throughout your Memory.

  • Natural language search is available in Photos, so you can just describe what you're looking for, like "Eric rollerblading in green."

  • Search can also find specific moments within a video clip.

  • Search" feature provides complete intelligent suggestions for narrowing your search

Transcription

In Notes and other applications, you can record audio and get a transcript and transcript summary, which is useful for recording lectures and other audio.

Focus Mode

A dedicated Reduced Distraction Focus Mode shows only the important notifications that require your attention, while filtering out everything else.

There’s a new toggle when customizing an existing focus mode or creating a new one that allows important notifications to interrupt while silencing unimportant ones, which does the same thing as “Reduce notification focus.” You can override notification settings for specific apps and people, which is how it worked before iOS 18.1.

Telephone

iOS 18.1 offers a call recording feature. When you start a call, you can tap the small record button in the upper left corner of the display. Before the recording starts, all participants will receive a notification that the call is being recorded.

Call recordings are saved in the Notes app, and you can tap to view a copy of the recording and generate a summary from it.

When reading an article in Reader Mode, you can choose to have Apple Intelligence summarize the article for you.

Apple Intelligence Report

In the Privacy & Security section of the Settings app, you can access the Apple Intelligence Report, which allows you to export Apple Intelligence data as part of Apple’s commitment to transparency around Apple Intelligence. Accessing and exporting Apple Intelligence data requires Face ID.

Apple Intelligence Waitlist

Developers who upgrade to iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, or macOS Sequoia 15.1 need to go to the Settings app and join the Apple Intelligence waiting list. There is a waiting list mechanism to ensure that the download work behind the scenes proceeds smoothly and the system is not overloaded.

While on the waitlist, the Apple device will download the necessary files to process on the device. So far, the time from Apple Intelligence waitlist registration to activation has been quick. The waitlist is per account, so you only need to register on one device to use it on multiple devices.

Apple Intelligence system compatibility

iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 betas are only available to qualified devices for registered developers. Devices that can't run Apple Intelligence will not see the update.

  • iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max

  • All Apple Silicon iPads

  • All Apple Silicon Macs

Apple Intelligence is currently only available in US English and is not available to developers in the EU or China. The device region and language must be set to US.

The Apple Intelligence system will not appear in the initial version of iOS 18 that will be released with the new iPhones in September. It will be introduced in the iOS 18.1 update a few weeks after iOS 18 is released.
