More than a month after the official announcement, Apple's personal intelligent system Apple Intelligence has finally begun to be implemented on its own devices.

On Monday, July 29, Eastern Time, Apple released the first version of Apple Intelligence, iPhone AI. There are similar versions for iPad and Mac. Since the new software was first released only in the developer beta of iOS 18.1, only registered developers who paid $99 can use this iOS 18.1 beta.

At this year's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 10, Apple introduced that Apple Intelligence leverages the powerful functions of generative artificial intelligence (AI) models based on personal scenarios. It is deeply integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, and can perform a variety of cross-App operations. At the same time, it combines personal scenarios to provide scenario-driven notifications, writing improvements, image generation and other functions to simplify and speed up daily task processes for users.

The Apple Intelligence update launched on Monday is only available on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Currently, only these two iPhone models support Apple Intelligence.

Moreover, after updating iOS, users must enter the Settings app on their iPhone, click on the new Apple Intelligence menu, and then click "Join Waiting List" to complete the waiting list registration in the Settings app before they can access Apple Intelligence services.

The first Apple Intelligence features released in beta on Monday include:

  • Writing Tools: Users can rewrite, proofread and summarize text in almost any scenario, including Mail, Notes, Pages documents and various third-party apps.
  • New features for Siri: Siri has a brand new design and will emit a soft light on the outer edge of the display when activated; it can switch between text and voice at will when communicating with users; Siri can provide users with device support everywhere and answer thousands of questions about how to use iPhone, iPad and Mac; if the user speaks haltingly, Siri can understand the user's commands and use the contextual scenarios for consecutive requests, maintaining the context from one request to the next.
  • New features in Mail: The Priority Messages feature will add an area at the top of the inbox in the Mail app to display the most urgent emails, such as dinner invitations or boarding passes that are only valid for the same day; users will no longer see just a preview of the first line of text in each email in their inbox, but a summary of the full text of the email, so they can understand the general content without opening the email; the Smart Replay feature generates quick reply text suggestions for users, and can also identify all questions raised in the email to ensure that users respond to all of them.

  • Focus ModeReduce Interruptions: Only notifications that might need to be seen right away, such as text messages telling you to pick up your kids early, will be displayed.
  • New features for photos: Users can directly use everyday language to find specific photos, such as "Maya wearing a tie-dyed shirt and skateboarding", or "Katie with stickers on her face". Video search has added the function of finding specific scenes in video clips, and users can jump directly to the relevant clips in the video; using the recall function, users only need to enter a description text to create the story they want to see. Apple Intelligence will use its understanding of language and images to select the most suitable photos and videos based on the description text, design a plot divided into different chapters based on the identified photo subject matter, and then organize these materials into a complete narrative film.

  • Speech Transcription: The Notes app and Phone app allow users to record audio, transcribe it to text, and generate a summary. When the recording function is turned on during a call, both parties on the call will automatically receive a prompt. After the call, Apple Intelligence will generate a summary to help users review the key points of the call.

There are also many Apple Intelligence features that Apple announced in June that were not yet available in iOS 18.1 on Monday. Apple said they will be available next year. They include:

  • Image Playground:Apple Intelligence can create and generate photos based on the user's photo library. Users can create images in seconds. There are three styles to choose from: sketch, illustration and animation. All images are created and generated on the device. Users are not limited by the number of images and can try as much as they want. This feature is built into multiple apps such as Messages. Users can share their self-made images with friends and see personalized creative recommendations generated based on current conversations.
  • Create a Genmoji for the occasion: Users only need to enter a description text to generate the corresponding Genmoji. Along with several additional options, they can also directly use photos of friends and family to generate Genmoji. Like emojis, Genmoji can be used directly in any message text, or can be sent as stickers or replies using the click-to-reply function.
  • New notification feature Priority Notifications: This feature appears at the top of grouped notifications, reminding users of the most important matters, and content summaries help users quickly browse large or grouped notifications, and display detailed information directly on the lock screen, such as some particularly active group chats.
  • A more powerful Siri with screen awareness:This Siri will be able to understand the user's content in more apps and perform corresponding operations based on it. For example, when a user receives a new address from a friend in the Messages app, he only needs to say "add this address to his contact card" and Siri will do it for him.
  • Integrating ChatGPT: Apple said that it is integrating ChatGPT into the operating experience of iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia, allowing users to directly use ChatGPT's special features, saving users the trouble of switching back and forth between different tools. Siri can directly call ChatGPT's special features as needed. It will first obtain the user's consent before sending the user's question to ChatGPT, along with any documents or photos, and finally directly reply to the user.

Netizens quickly gave feedback on social media X about the AI features provided by the latest beta version of iOS 18.1. One netizen said that Apple Intelligence helped me find a better way to express what I really wanted to say, and attached a video showing that AI modified the content he was about to send in the conversation to be more euphemistic.

Some netizens praised Apple Intelligence's new SIri interface.

One user said that he liked the new Apple Intelligence Siri animation and attached a short video showing that the double-click gesture can be fixed after restarting, and he was grateful for this great trick.
