It's been several years since the last Borderlands game was released, and with the Borderlands movie on the horizon, many fans can't help but wonder when the beloved series will return to gaming. According to Gearbox head of development Randy Pitchford, the answer will be revealed soon.

In an interview with GamesRadar+, Pitchford revealed: "I haven't been perfect at hiding the many projects we have going on, and we have some big things in the works. I'm sure the fans will be very, very satisfied when we're ready to announce the next game project. I can tell you that we won't keep you waiting too long."

Pitchford hinted that an announcement about the next Borderlands game could come before the end of the year. He added: "Maybe sooner. I have the biggest, best team ever working on something we know our fans can expect, so I'm super excited and can't wait to talk about it! I wish I could talk about it right now because we have so much to share!"

Borderlands 3, released in 2019, was the last major game in the series, and 2022 brought us a number of spin-offs, including the story-driven New Borderlands Tales and the fantasy-themed game Tiny Tina's Fantasy Land, which incorporates RPG elements. The latter in particular has been a huge success, and Pitchford hinted that we might see more content in this D&D-style sub-universe in the future.

"The first Fantasy Lands was a bigger success than the first Borderlands, and that's something we can build on," Pitchford explained. "I love fantasy, and that's why we made the original Dragon Keep DLC for Borderlands 2, because I love fantasy so much. A lot of people at Gearbox love fantasy, and that's allowed us to experiment with a lot of themes and the universe of Borderlands. I think fans can expect more of that."
