The opening ceremony of this year's Olympics took place in Paris on July 26 and will run until August 11. The opening ceremony showcased various aspects of French culture, including football star Zinedine Zidane, a beheaded queen, and a mysterious hooded character leaping from a rooftop, apparently based on Ubisoft's legendary game IP "Assassin's Creed."

Many spectators were surprised and excited by the appearance of the Assassin's Creed protagonist at an international sporting event:

Assassin's Creed publisher Ubisoft - a French company - seemed to hint at the surprise earlier in the day in a couple of tweets, one teasing the official Olympics account and another sharing a trailer for Assassin's Creed: Unity, a game set during the French Revolution. It wasn't entirely clear if this was a direct nod to the country's video game heritage or part of a branding push.

"We were impressed by the opening ceremony and are extremely proud to see Assassin's Creed featured as an inspiration for creators," a Ubisoft spokesperson said in a statement to Kotaku. "This is a true testament to the influence video games have on pop culture."
