According to Reuters, on July 26, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Thursday that he would discuss investing $5 billion in artificial intelligence startup xAI as the electric car maker looks to redouble its efforts to accelerate the development of its robotaxi and autonomous driving products.

The automaker is beefing up its artificial intelligence infrastructure to train the models for Tesla's self-driving technology, after the ambitious project faced numerous technical and legal hurdles in recent years.

"Looks like public is in favor. Will discuss with Tesla board," Musk said in a post on X after a poll on the social media platform showed nearly 68% of respondents said the company should invest in Grok chatbot developer xAI.

Earlier this week, during Tesla's earnings call, Musk said xAI will help advance fully autonomous driving and build new Tesla data centers, adding that there are opportunities to integrate Grok with Tesla's software.

Tesla's second-quarter automotive gross margin and profit fell short of Wall Street expectations on Tuesday as the company cut prices and offered incentives to boost sales.

Musk, the world's richest man, launched xAI last year to compete with ChatGPT maker OpenAI and its backers Microsoft and Alphabet.

The startup raised $6 billion in a Series B round in May at a post-money valuation of $24 billion. Its investors include Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital.
