For me, Nubia has always been a somewhat special brand.

Compared with Xiaomi, Huami, and OPPO, Nubia is much more low-key, but it is indeed the only manufacturer on the market that is still insisting on updating the under-screen camera technology. It is this persistence that has brought a little vitality to the originally boring mobile phone market. Although I don’t quite understand why Nubia is so obsessed with under-screen cameras, at least it allows us to see the possibilities beyond the hole-punch design.

Just recently, Nubia released its latest generation flagship product - Nubia Z60 Ultra Leading Edition. As the only imaging phone on the market equipped with an under-screen camera, what is its actual experience like?

OK, let’s get straight into the actual testing phase.

It’s square and tough, but feels…

The first impression that the Nubia Z60 Ultra Leading Edition gave me was "square". Whether it is the overall shape of the phone, the vertical frame, the right-angle corners or the camera module on the back, the word "square" is highlighted. Coupled with the flat screen and back panel, it looks like a "tough guy" style.

The front view of the Nubia Z60 Ultra Leader Edition is very pleasing, and both the forehead and the left and right frames are well processed. The narrowness of the frame is first-class in the entire mobile phone market. By the way, it is also one of the few mobile phones on the market that uses under-screen camera technology, so in terms of front view and screen-to-body ratio, it is definitely "far ahead".

Since we are talking about the screen, let's talk about the parameters of this screen: 2480*1116 resolution, 1500nit local peak brightness, 2.5D flexible straight screen, 2160Hz ultra-high frequency PWM dimming, 120Hz refresh rate, 100% DCI-P3 wide color gamut. It is a relatively standard screen.

Of course, the biggest highlight of the Z60 Ultra is not the screen parameters, but the almost completely "disappeared" front camera. According to the official description, it is equipped with a series of high-tech configurations such as UDC Ultra independent display chip, independent pixel driver and high-transparency invisible circuit.Putting aside these promotional terms, from a personal perspective, the Z60 Ultra will make you completely forget the existence of this front camera during daily use. Whether it is a white page or a black page, you really can't see its existence unless you look carefully.

Turning to the back, its camera module design also continues the "rugged" style of the Nubia Z series. In the rectangular module, the main camera is surrounded by Nubia's classic "red circle" as a decorative ring, and there is Nubia's own "neo" red dot, plus this protruding and three-dimensional periscope camera, it is combined into this camera Deco that looks a bit casual but is actually very eye-catching.

The two-stage lever button that has been well received on the Nubia Z series is also used on the Z60 Ultra. At first glance, it looks like a mute lever button similar to the iPhone, but in fact it is a button that can quickly wake up the camera (of course you can also change it to other functions in the settings. The default is to turn on the humanistic street shooting mode in the camera).In actual tests, it is possible to quickly switch to the camera page regardless of whether in the game or in the screen-off state. As a mobile phone focusing on photography, this is quite commendable.

To sum up, the appearance design of Z60 Ultra is indeed unique in the market today. The square body, the excellent front and the "exaggerated" camera module are suitable for those who like tough appearance. However, the right-angle frame of Z60 Ultra is a bit "too straight", and the body is not thin to begin with, so the grip is only average. Without a phone case, the feel is even worse.

If Nubia can consider reducing the screen size or making the corners more rounded in the future, perhaps the holding experience will be much better.

35mm main camera, still the only one

In this era of one-inch-bottom cameras per capita, Nubia still did not choose to "follow the crowd" but insisted on a 35mm custom lens. This time, the main camera of the Z60 Ultra is equipped with an IMX906 sensor and upgraded with a larger aperture, which further improves the aperture of the lens. This is also the industry's largest main camera with the largest amount of light entering, even surpassing the one-inch-bottom sensor.

I guess many readers are still confused after reading this, so I will explain it in detail. In most cases, the main camera of the mobile phone has a focal length of 23mm, while Nubia uses 35mm. These two focal lengths are also very common in photography. These two focal lengths represent the same perspective in APS-C and full-frame, and the conversion factor between them is 1.5. In other words, a 1.5x magnification of the equivalent 23mm main camera is exactly the equivalent of 35mm. By the way, the conversion factor between Nubia's base and a one-inch base is also about 1.5.

In the simplest terms, when taking 35mm photos, the Nubia Z60 Ultra Leading Edition can use an entire CMOS and all lenses to achieve better imaging performance and higher pixel count.

The reason why Nubia has always insisted on 35mm is simple: this focal length is closest to the human eye's field of vision, which can better highlight the subject and make people pay more attention to the specific picture and scene being shot, rather than focusing on the exaggerated perspective angle, which has a strong sense of equipment detachment. The same is true in the photography industry. The 35mm focal length is very applicable and can be used to record subjects such as scenery, portraits, street photography, and close-ups.

By the way, the periscope telephoto lens of the Nubia Z60 Ultra Leading Edition also uses a customized 85mm focal length, which is suitable for shooting half-length portraits as well as some human scenes. It is also a commonly used focal length for many photography enthusiasts.Just from the focal length, it can be seen that Nubia has a unique and professional understanding of photography. If you are also a photography enthusiast, then the Nubia Z60 Ultra Leading Edition will definitely give you a familiar feeling.

As can be seen from the photos, the main camera and telephoto imaging quality of the Nubia Z60 Ultra Leading Edition are almost impeccable, with no problems such as smearing and noise, and the overall color performance is also very pleasing and natural.

(Photo credit: Lei Technology)

However, perhaps Nubia did not put much effort into glare suppression. If there is a high-brightness light source in the picture, the imaging performance of the entire photo will be affected to a certain extent. Although I do not recommend that you hold your phone facing the sun and other light sources to shoot, if the anti-glare ability is average, it will kill many composition techniques. I hope Nubia can improve it in the future.

The humanistic street shooting mode is a highlight of the Nubia Z60 Ultra Leading Edition, and it is also the mode I have used most frequently in the past few days. After turning on this mode, you can select various film filters in the upper right corner of the page. Some of the filters have excellent color adjustment, which gives you the feeling of using a film camera.

In addition, in some scenes, the Nubia Z60 Ultra Leading Edition will carefully add dark corners to enhance the overall atmosphere. This is also a common shooting technique in photography, which shows that Nubia's photography team really understands the various shooting needs of photography enthusiasts.

Flagship phones naturally have flagship configurations, and performance is taken to the next level

Of course, as a flagship product with a starting price of RMB 4,299, the Nubia Z60 Ultra Leading Edition is naturally not ambiguous in terms of configuration. It is equipped with the third-generation Snapdragon 8 "Leading Edition" processor, which is also the most powerful processor in the Android market. Compared with the third-generation Snapdragon 8 processor, its CPU super core frequency has been increased to 3.4Ghz, and the GPU frequency has been increased to 1Ghz, which is a typical half-generation overclocked version.

OK, let’s get straight into the testing phase. In the AnTuTu running score test that everyone loves, the Nubia Z60 Ultra Leading Edition scored 2054529 points without turning on the performance mode, making it worthy of being the king of contemporary running scores.

In GeekBench 6, the Nubia Z60 Ultra Leading Edition also achieved a good score of 2188 in single-core and 6867 in multi-core, still leading the pack.

As for why the performance mode was not turned on during the running points, it was because I found that there was a small bug in Nubia's system. Perhaps Nubia is very confident in its gaming performance. Whenever the user enters the performance mode in the game cube, the system will play a somewhat "exaggerated" animation to tell the user that "the phone has entered performance mode", which is understandable.However, when AnTuTu finishes rendering and prepares to enter the next stage, its built-in game space will immediately play the animation again, resulting in an unstable frame rate for the entire test process, and the score is much lower than that of the normal mode.

The next part is the game testing part that everyone is more concerned about. In fact, most readers can already guess the result. As for the mobile games currently on the market, they have no pressure in front of the leading version of the third-generation Snapdragon 8.

The first is "League of Legends Mobile". At room temperature of 26°C, after playing three or four games in a row, the Nubia Z60 Ultra Leading Edition was able to maintain a stable 120 frames throughout the whole process, without any lag in either the laning phase or the team battle.

In "Genshin Impact", the picture quality and frame rate are set to the highest. After half an hour of running the map, the average frame rate is 59.4 frames, which can be said to be stress-free.

Obviously, current games do not bring any pressure to the Nubia Z60 Ultra Leading Edition. Perhaps the focus of future mobile phone chip development will no longer be performance but energy efficiency. After all, there are very few scenarios that can bring out the full performance of the processor.

Regarding charging, the Nubia Z60 Ultra Leading Edition is equipped with a 6000mAh large-capacity battery. This is one of the reasons why its body is a little thick. Although the 80W wired fast charging is a bit mediocre at the moment, it can also quickly restore power to users.

Summary: Still the most distinctive flagship

As usual, I will summarize some of the advantages and disadvantages of this phone.

advantage:

1. The image performance is good, and the decision to stick to the 35mm focal length is commendable;

2. The performance scheduling is aggressive, not inferior to some gaming phones;

3. The focal length setting is reasonable, making it easier to get started.

shortcoming:

1. The grip is average, with much room for improvement;

2. There are still many minor problems in the system, which require more OTA updates to solve.

By the way, the starting price of the Nubia Z60 Ultra Leading Edition is 4,299 yuan, and the top-end price is 5,999 yuan. This pricing is actually in line with the positioning of an imaging flagship.

In that era when the mobile phone market was full of competition, Nubia was able to accumulate a certain number of fans because of its outstanding innovation. The 2.5D glass refraction frameless design, the rich camera functions such as taking pictures of the starry sky and the Milky Way, the ultimate performance release of the built-in fan of the mobile phone, and the appearance innovation of the all-screen Nubia X have refreshed the cognition of many consumers, and these advanced concepts have been learned and used by many friendly companies to this day.

Nubia is still the same today. When everyone is heading in the same direction and has rolled to the point where there is nothing left to roll, Nubia still insists on being itself and continues to make progress in the two areas of 35mm main camera and under-screen camera technology.Its screen is not the best, its camera is not top-notch, its charging speed, battery capacity, and performance release are not perfect, but it can provide a good experience in all aspects in the same price range, and it also has some unique highlights. So I think the Nubia Z60 Ultra Leading Edition can be considered a good product.

But then again, although the Nubia Z60 Ultra Leading Edition is a very good and distinctive product, it does have many shortcomings in the system. We also hope that Nubia can make it a truly easy-to-use flagship phone in the subsequent OTA.
