Rebecca Ford, creative director of Warframe, recently revealed in an interview with GamesRadar+ that for the upcoming new update Warframe 1999, the team at developer Digital Extremes was inspired by the huge success of last year's hit game Baldur's Gate 3, and it was also the "finishing touch" that the team finally decided to add a romance system to the game.

Rebecca said that she "always wanted to add some kind of romantic system to Warframe", but "there was no suitable scenario to add it". Although Larian Studios was not the only reason that the game finally added the system, Rebecca admitted that the success of Baldur 3 was the main factor that gave her the courage to finally add the system to the game 11 years later.

“I think there were two things that really gave us the courage to push forward,” she says. “Certainly the success of Baldur’s Gate and its romance system made us feel like, ‘Okay, people do want this fantasy thing,’” she says. “It definitely had an influence, but I should say we did have the idea of adding it before… Baldur’s Gate was definitely the final nail in the coffin, and I’m grateful for that, and it’s been one of the best gaming experiences for us ever.”

The team showed off Warframe 1999 at the annual TennoCon conference last weekend and announced a release date this winter. It will be a content update based on the original game, a prequel story of the game, including 90s boy bands, music, and motorcycle racing. This is indeed a very suitable setting for the romance system.
