According to Xinhua News Agency, on July 23, at the 142nd Session of the International Olympic Committee held in Paris, France, a highly anticipated proposal was unanimously passed: to hold the first Olympic e-sports Games in Saudi Arabia in 2025.

The International Olympic Committee had previously announced that it would cooperate with the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee to host the first e-sports Olympics, and said that the proposal would be reviewed at the International Olympic Committee meeting on the eve of the opening of the Paris Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee said on its official website that "history was made today". At the press conference of the plenary session, IOC President Bach said that the world is changing and people are experiencing a digital revolution. This cooperation is a milestone. The International Olympic Committee and the e-sports community need to learn a lot and find common ground. He also emphasized that this cooperation is based on the Olympic Charter and Olympic values.

The International Olympic Committee has been involved in e-sports since 2018 and will host the Olympic E-sports Week in Singapore in 2023. At the 141st General Assembly held in Mumbai in 2023, the International Olympic Committee announced that it would study the establishment of an e-sports Olympic Games. Over the past year, the International Olympic Committee's e-sports committee has made great progress.

According to reports, the cooperation period between the International Olympic Committee and the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee is 12 years. After the proposal is passed, the two sides will immediately start selecting the host city and venue for the event, and confirm details such as the competition time, events and athlete promotion procedures.

The IOC said it would give priority to cooperation with international single-sport organizations that have already launched e-sports competitions, and would also give priority to inviting national (regional) Olympic committees that have accepted e-sports events. In addition, due to the special nature of the e-sports Olympics, the IOC must adopt a different approach to event financing and preparation. The IOC will establish a new specialized agency that is clearly separated from the preparation and financial model of the traditional Olympics.
