Adobe released new Firefly tools for Photoshop and Illustrator on Tuesday, allowing graphic designers to use the company's internal AI models in more ways. At the same time, Adobe's new features also allow creative workers to describe the effect they want through short prompts and then receive textures or images generated by AI. These works that used to take hours to complete can now be completed in one minute.

Media reports that as Adobe increases its investment in AI, some loyal customers feel threatened because the company uses their works to train Firefly, and Adobe also pays annual bonuses to Adobe Stock photographers and illustrators as compensation for this privilege. Adobe said that the company is taking a "creator-friendly approach" and providing Creative Cloud users with a certain number of generated credits each month at no additional cost.

“That value is already built into their Creative Cloud plans,” Deepa Subramaniam, Adobe’s vice president of product marketing, told CNBC. “We just want to put this technology in the hands of users, so the credit limit they get is very generous.”

Illustrator is releasing a new test tool, Generate Shape Fills, that lets users add details and texture to shapes through text hints or by selecting a style reference. The feature is powered by an updated version of the Firefly Vector model released on Tuesday. In a demonstration, Adobe Creative Cloud ambassador Paul Trani showed how the new feature comes with a slider that lets creators choose the amount of detail to add. After Firefly generates these details, Illustrator allows users to edit them, which sets it apart from most AI image generators.

For Photoshop, Adobe is broadly rolling out Firefly's text-generated image feature, which allows users to create AI images in the application by pressing the "Generate Image" button and describing the effect they want. This feature is powered by Adobe Firefly's Image 3 base model and was previously only available in beta.

While Adobe doesn’t charge a premium subscription fee for generative AI like some of its competitors, the returns are good so far. In its most recent earnings call, the company said customers are switching to more expensive plans to get more Firefly build credits (one build credit is equivalent to one build for other AI tools). Since its launch in March 2023, Adobe says Firefly has generated more than 9 billion images.

In addition, Illustrator has been updated with some new features without AI. Adobe's new size tool allows users to calculate the length and angle of images in Illustrator. Illustrator's testing tool Mockup allows users to realistically place logos on any product by uploading images. In contrast, previously Mockup only allowed logos to be placed on a predetermined set of images. And with Retype, Illustrator can recognize and match fonts, allowing users to use them elsewhere.

Adobe shares fell 1.22% to $548.02 in intraday trading on Tuesday. The company's stock has fallen 5.48% so far this year, compared with the S&P 500's gain of more than 17% this year.
