Recently, there have been reports that Apple is considering launching two different designs of foldable iPhones, and they will not be launched until 2027. A new industry report claims that Apple's iPhone Fold will be launched earlier than expected, that is, the iPhone 18 series. Reports about Apple producing a foldable iPhone have been going on for years, at least its competitors have been producing it for a long time.

However, according to Digitimes, Apple may have already chosen its own design, and the overall timeline may be accelerating. According to reports from multiple Korean media outlets, Apple officially began research in 2004, and that's when it signed the contract with Samsung.

Assuming Apple's typical two-year product development cycle, the report predicts that the iPhone foldable will be launched in 2026.

But be aware that while Digitimes has a good track record of obtaining information from the supply chain, it does not obtain these details from its own sources. Furthermore, the publication has a much worse track record of drawing conclusions based on its information.

In addition to the expected timeline, the report also claims that Apple's first foldable iPhone will be top-down, meaning that the top half will fold over the bottom half when held in portrait orientation.

So instead of opening up like a book into a wider screen, it would be a normal-sized iPhone that folds in half. The report, spotted by 9to5mac, also states that it would be roughly the same size as current iPhones.

There is no indication yet whether the foldable iPhone will also feature a screen as previously predicted. Earlier reports also said Apple would try out the foldable design with the iPad mini, but new reports say Apple now wants to produce the foldable iPhone first.

A foldable iPhone is apparently in development, and whether it will be released in 2026 is anyone's guess, but it's a possibility.
