US President Biden and Vice President Harris
After U.S. President Biden announced on July 21 that he would not seek re-election and expressed support for Vice President Harris to run for re-election, the Democratic Party is urgently mobilizing and taking quick action, calling on the party's elected officials, coalition groups and donors to unite behind Harris, help block potential challengers and support Harris for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Harris herself stated in a statement that she would "fight to win the nomination."
Harris reportedly made her first direct fundraising appeal on social media on Sunday.
“I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party — to unite our country — to defeat Trump and his extreme populist agenda. If you are with me, please make your donation now,” Harris wrote on the social media platform X.
Harris' post links to a donation page with a portrait of the vice president and the words "Donate and Elect Harris." The fundraising description says the donation will "benefit Biden," indicating that Harris will continue Biden's campaign base.
Although Harris has the support of the incumbent president, she is not yet the official nominee of the Democratic Party, and it is not yet certain whether she will eventually become a presidential candidate.
July 21, sleepless night at the White House
CNN quoted sources as saying that after President Biden decided to withdraw from the 2024 campaign, Biden senior adviser Anita Dunn held a conference call with all White House staff on Sunday afternoon, telling them to focus on fighting for Vice President Kamala Harris from now on.
At the same time, the opposition party, the Republican National Committee, issued a statement on Biden's withdrawal from the presidential race, sharply and fiercely criticizing Vice President Harris.
"Every failure we've seen from the Biden administration — the Afghanistan withdrawal, the crisis at the border, rampant inflation, and American weakness abroad — was orchestrated by Biden and Harris. Not only will Harris be a disaster in the White House, she's also helped Biden cover up his deteriorating health during his presidency, undermining her credibility," the RNC statement said.
It was also reported that JD Vance, the Republican vice presidential candidate who was nominated last week, attacked Harris on Sunday, accusing her of lying about President Biden's mental ability.
Vance, the Republican vice presidential candidate nominated on July 18
"Biden is the worst president I have ever had in my lifetime, and Harris has been right there with him. For the past four years, she has co-signed Biden's open borders and green scam policies that have driven up housing and grocery prices. She owns all of Biden's failures and has lied about Biden's mental ability for nearly four years - burdening the country with a president who is not up to the job."
Vance, the Ohio senator, wrote in a post on Platform X: "President Trump and I are ready to save America, no matter who the Democratic nominee is, bring it on."
Before Biden announced his withdrawal from the race, Vance said he should resign immediately if Biden withdrew from the 2024 race.
CNN quoted two sources familiar with the situation as saying that former President Trump's campaign team has been preparing information about Biden's replacement for several weeks, including Vice President Harris, California Governor Gavin Newsom and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. But most of the focus is on Harris.
The Trump campaign is convinced that other Democrats will fall in line behind Harris and that there is no way the Democratic Party will bypass the first Black woman to serve as president.
Two sources close to Trump said that while members of Trump's team have publicly stated that they want Harris to replace Biden as the presidential candidate, privately they have some concerns about any potential candidate because they know that any change could increase enthusiasm within the Democratic Party before the election and increase turnout.
