On July 20, "Steel Academician" Cui Kun celebrated his 100th birthday. At 10 a.m., at the Sanatorium of Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Cui Kun, a national moral model, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and professor of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, accompanied by his wife Professor Zhu Huinan, came to the event site, and everyone immediately sent warm blessings.

“We will continue to help poor students”

"If conditions permit, we will continue to help poor students and make contributions." Academician Cui Kun expressed his wish for his 100th birthday. He told reporters that he hopes to continue the tradition of scholarships and encourage more young students to climb the peak of science and contribute their youth and wisdom to the prosperity of the country.

Cui Kun was born in 1925 into an intellectual family in Jinan, Shandong. Having experienced the difficult years of continuous war, Cui Kun knew that it was not easy for children from poor families to study. After retiring from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Cui Kun was keen on supporting poor students. Since 2013, Cui Kun and his wife have jointly established scholarships, with a total donation of 10 million yuan, helping more than 500 young scholars to move forward steadily on the road of scientific research.

This 10 million is almost their life savings, all from wages and subsidies. "All my achievements are cultivated by the country and the school. They sent me abroad to study, and I should repay the motherland in this way." Academician Cui Kun's words are simple and unpretentious, always full of feelings for the country and the people.

“I hope the new book will be published soon.”

Cui Kun also shared another wish of his: "I hope that the third edition of "Composition, Structure and Properties of Steel" can be published soon."

This monograph, which is hailed as the "encyclopedia" of special steels, is the result of Cui Kun's full efforts.

Cui Kun had a dream of saving the country through industry since he was young. In the flames of the Anti-Japanese War, he resolutely chose the mechanical major, and after the founding of New China, he went to the Moscow Steel Institute in the Soviet Union for further studies, specializing in metallurgy and heat treatment. After returning from his studies, he devoted himself to the research and education of special steels. He has long been committed to the alloying and inclusion engineering research of high-performance new mold material steels, and has successfully developed a series of new mold steels with excellent performance, making great contributions to the development of new steel grades in my country.

In 2006, Cui Kun began to collect information and write "Steel Composition, Structure and Properties", which took 6 years to complete. The book has more than 2 million words and more than 1,500 pages. It is the first monograph in my country that comprehensively and systematically introduces special steel. Subsequently, he spent another 7 years to revise and supplement it, and published the second edition. Today, he revealed to reporters that the third edition of the book will be published at the end of the year.
