On July 18, local time, the nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced. Shogun, which aired on the FX cable TV network, received the most nominations, 25, while Netflix dominated the platform field with 107 nominations.

The first season of Shogun aired on February 27 this year. The series is based on the novel of the same name published in 1975 by Australian writer James Clavell. It focuses on the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 during the Edo Shogunate era from the perspective of Westerners who came to Japan on merchant ships. It received 25 nominations, including Best Drama Series, Best Actor (Hiroyuki Sanada), Best Actress (Anna Sawai), Best Supporting Actor (Hiratake Dai, Asano Tadanobu), and Best Director (Fred Toyer). The second season of Shogun has been renewed and will start filming next year.

Another ace work of FX cable TV network, "Bear's Diner", won a big victory at the last Emmy Awards and set a new record for the highest number of nominations in the comedy category with 23 nominations. It will face the challenge of "Only Murder in the Building" broadcasted by Hulu platform, which received 21 nominations.

Other works that received multiple nominations include "True Detective Season 4" (19 nominations) broadcast on HBO's Max platform, "The Crown Season 6" (18 nominations) and "Reindeer Baby" (11 nominations) broadcast on Netflix.

In terms of platforms, Netflix is followed by the emerging FX TV Network (93 nominations), HBO TV Network ranks third with 91 nominations, and streaming upstart Apple TV+ ranks fourth with 72 nominations. If we look at the group, Disney, which owns FX, ABC, Hulu, and Disney+, is clearly the leader, and 183 nominations also set a new record for the group's best nominations at the Emmy Awards.

Compared with the blockbuster new dramas, what is more gratifying is that the Emmy Awards also took care of the previously forgotten gems. For example, the high-scoring spy drama "The Outcast" starring Gary Oldman was finally recognized after three seasons; and the comedy "Reservation Dogs" created by Taika Waititi, which focuses on Native American boys and girls, also waited for three seasons before being recognized by the Emmy Awards.

As usual, this year there were some dramas that were originally favored but ultimately lost out, such as "Cursed," starring Emma Stone, which was broadcast on Showtime, which did not receive a single nomination; and "The Regime," starring Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant, which was broadcast on HBO, which only received a nomination for Best Costume Design.

The broadcast time of this year's Emmy Awards nominees is limited to June 1, 2023 to May 31, 2024, and the awards ceremony will be held in Los Angeles on the evening of September 15. Interestingly, due to the strike of the Writers Guild and the Screen Actors Guild of America last year, the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony, which was originally scheduled to be held in September last year, was postponed to January 15 this year; that is to say, there are two Emmy Awards ceremonies in one year this year, which can be regarded as a special page in the history of the award.
