Today we often lament that computer keyboards have replaced handwriting and calligraphy has declined. But more than 70 years ago, people also felt that calligraphy was threatened because the widespread use of pens and pencils had reduced the use of brushes.

Therefore, in 1938, although the whole country was in the midst of the Anti-Japanese War, the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China still sent a telegram requesting local education departments to vigorously promote calligraphy and require calligraphy to be included in primary and secondary school classrooms.

This is an urgent telegram, talking about the importance of calligraphy to the Chinese people, the crisis calligraphy is facing at the moment, and how to promote the study of calligraphy.

Under this "strict order", a set of student-only calligraphy copybooks was released, including works by famous historical calligraphers such as Yan Zhenqing's "Duobao Pagoda", but more recent works by Prince Cheng, Qian Nanyuan, Zhao Zhiqian, etc. There is also a copybook of small regular script, which was written by an employee of the Commercial Press at that time.

"Xinglu Xiaokai" is the collective memory of a generation, but this generation is now in their eighties or nineties.

Writer Li Guowen wrote an article saying that when he was a child, he practiced calligraphy. The large characters were from "Duobao Pagoda" and the small characters were from "Xinglu Xiaokai". At that time, calligraphy copies were far less abundant than they are now, and it was even more impossible to "learn from the best", so this small regular script nourished a generation.

"Xinglu" is Tong Shigui, a native of Jiading, Shanghai, born in the Qing Dynasty, worked at the Commercial Press in the Republic of China, and died after liberation. This old man Tong had many disciples and had a great influence at the time, but it is difficult to find this person in the history of calligraphy.

But his small regular script is really "beautiful", and as a famous popularizer of calligraphy, he deserves respect.
