Our province's scholar wins Tan Kah Kee Youth Science Award for the first time

■The winner, Zhao Zhisheng, is a professor at Yanshan University. His research has solved the problem of the direct phase transition mechanism from graphite to diamond, which has troubled the scientific community for more than half a century.

Zonglan Client News (Reporter Chen Hua of Hebei Daily, Correspondents Yan Shuting and Wei Lintao) learned from Yanshan University that recently, Professor Zhao Zhisheng of the State Key Laboratory of Metastable Materials Preparation Technology and Science of the university won the 2024 Tan Kah Kee Youth Science Award. It is reported that this is also the first Tan Kah Kee Youth Science Award won by a Hebei scholar.

Professor Zhao Zhisheng's award-winning achievement is titled "The Creation of New Carbon Materials". He and his collaborators revealed the phase transition mechanism of carbon materials such as graphite, glassy carbon, and fullerene under high temperature and high pressure, and synthesized a series of new carbon materials with unique performance combinations. The coherent interface structure between graphite and diamond was experimentally confirmed, solving the problem of the direct phase transition mechanism from graphite to diamond, which has troubled the scientific community for more than half a century.

The Tan Kah Kee Youth Science Award was established in 2010. It is organized and evaluated based on the platform of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and is awarded every two years. It aims to reward young scientific and technological talents who have independently made important original scientific and technological achievements in China.
