I don’t know if it was agreed upon or not, but the three major data companies have released their global Q2 reports in the past two days. After IDC and Counterpoint officially released their 2024 Q2 global smartphone reports on July 15, Canalys also released its report on July 16.

Canalys believes that in the second quarter of 2024, global smartphone shipments reached 288 million units, a year-on-year increase of 12%. This is the third consecutive quarter of year-on-year growth in the global smartphone market, indicating that the global smartphone market is recovering. The decisive factor is the innovative technology of generative artificial intelligence and the rising demand in the mass market. It seems that AI may become the next outlet for smartphones.

Now let's look at the top five global rankings for Q2 given by Canalys:

Champion: Samsung, with a market share of 18%, a decrease of three percentage points year-on-year;

Runner-up: Apple, with a market share of 16%, down one percentage point year-on-year;

Third place: Xiaomi, with a market share of 15%, a year-on-year increase of two percentage points;

Fourth: vivo, with a market share of 9%, an increase of one percentage point year-on-year;

Fifth: Transsion, with a market share of 9%, which is the same as the previous year.

The report specifically pointed out that Xiaomi's year-on-year growth was 30%, the fastest growth among the top five brands. In addition, it should be noted that although some brands have reduced their year-on-year market share, this does not mean that their year-on-year shipments have decreased. This is because Canalys did not give the specific shipments of each brand in Q2. Of course, the biggest difference between this data and the data of the other two data companies is that Transsion replaced OPPO to become the fifth in the world, and OPPO fell out of the top five in the world. In the other two companies, OPPO ranked fifth in the world, and Transsion did not appear in the top five.

Samsung is definitely in the top tier in terms of overall market share, with Apple and Xiaomi only one percentage point apart. This shows that Xiaomi is infinitely close to Apple, while the shares of the two brands ranked behind are only in the single digit, which shows that Xiaomi is ahead of other domestic brands globally, and its overall shipments may be nearly twice that of other domestic brands.
