According to Ericsson China, on July 15, Ericsson and OPPO signed a multi-year global patent cross-licensing agreement. The agreement covers cross-licensing of essential patents for cellular technology standards including 5G. OPPO will pay patent licensing fees to Ericsson.

In addition to cross-licensing, OPPO and Ericsson will also carry out business cooperation on a number of 5G-related projects, including equipment testing, customer interaction and marketing activities.

Christina Petersson, Chief Intellectual Property Officer at Ericsson, says: “This important royalty-bearing license agreement between Ericsson and OPPO enables Ericsson to further invest in fundamental communications technologies. This license agreement demonstrates the efficient operation of the patent licensing industry and shows that the vast majority of license agreements are reached based on commercial negotiations. It also reflects the respect of both parties for each other’s patent portfolios. We now look forward to increasing Ericsson’s IP revenues through additional 5G agreements and expansion into other licensing areas such as IoT and consumer electronics.。”

The agreement is in line with global practice whereby companies offering products using cellular 3GPP standards, such as 5G, are required to enter into licensing agreements with patent holders to avoid infringing those patents while ensuring that patent holders are compensated for their research and development investments.

In addition, the economic benefits of the agreement have been reflected in Ericsson's financial report for the second quarter of 2024. (Proofreading/Jiang Yutong)
