Although Musk did not reveal a specific date for the launch event, Reuters reported last week that the event originally scheduled for August 8 had been postponed to October.

"I am requesting a design change to the front of the vehicle that I think is important, and the extra time will allow us to show off some other features," Musk said on his social media platform X in response to a user discussing the event.

A person familiar with the matter said on Friday that the launch of the self-driving taxis had been delayed, but did not provide further details.

The delay in the self-driving taxi launch was not surprising to Wall Street analysts and Tesla investors, given the numerous engineering and regulatory challenges in developing self-driving taxis and their systems.

Following reports on April 5 that Tesla had canceled its long-promised low-cost model, Musk announced that self-driving taxis would be released in August and said the company would continue to develop those vehicles on the same small car platform.

Musk has revealed few details about the self-driving taxis so far. He only said that some vehicles will be owned and operated by Tesla, while others will be personally owned and rented out on Tesla's online platform. Tesla's stock rose sharply on Monday after Musk publicly endorsed Donald Trump's candidacy for the US presidency. Investors hope that Trump's election will help Tesla more easily obtain regulatory approval for self-driving taxis and systems.

Musk said in 2022 that Tesla expected to be able to mass-produce self-driving taxis without steering wheels or pedals by 2024, although he has previously broken his promises several times on his goal of achieving self-driving cars.

Tesla's stock price rose 1.78% on Monday, closing at $252.64 per share.
