He once served as the county magistrate of She County, Anhui Province, and lived in Yangzhou after leaving office. He was good at painting landscapes and flowers. His landscapes were inspired by the Song Dynasty, and were close to the school of Zhao Lingrang and Guo Xi. At the age of 55, he changed his right hand to his left hand due to an epidemic, and was renamed "Shang Zuosheng" and engraved "Dingsi Canren". His paintings have the vigorous spirit of the Song Dynasty and the tranquility of the Yuan Dynasty. Qin Zuyong's "Tongyin Lunhua" commented: "Strange and wonderful, free from all the brush and ink paths, with interesting techniques, although not following the rules, but not deviating from the rules."
