Galaxy Unpacked 2024 saw a slew of device announcements, with the biggest highlights being new AI features, the latest line of foldable phones, and Samsung's first foray into a new smart ring product category. At the event, TM Roh announced that an extended reality (XR) platform is in development and could be available this year. The news has the tech world buzzing, and a recent report has provided more insights into the Android XR headset and its possible release. Samsung will release a developer version of the Android XR headset in October, and we could see an official release in 2025.

At the 2024 Unpacked conference, audiences saw a preview of the Extended Reality XR platform, which has been in development for some time and will be launched this year. The first mention of developing mixed reality devices came in February last year, when the company mentioned the possibility of launching XR headsets in cooperation with Qualcomm and Google. It was not until July 10 that we got an official announcement about the launch of the platform this year.

According to Business Insider, the internal timeline of the Android XR headset built by Qualcomm and Samsung has been exposed. The developer version may be launched in October this year, while the consumer version will be launched in early 2025. The headset, codenamed "Moohan", will use Google's new AR software and is Google's challenge to Apple's Vision Pro.

The headset was originally set to be released in the first quarter of this year, as the Vision Pro made quite a splash in February, but the company decided the device wasn’t quite ready for launch and the date was pushed back multiple times.

The report also revealed another internal speculation. According to two employees familiar with the matter, internal speculation is that Samsung will also be the first to manufacture glasses equipped with Google AR software.

Other details about the launch format are scarce at this time, but we expect them to emerge as the launch date approaches. We speculate that the headset will feature an OLED screen, hand and eye tracking, 8 tracking cameras, and the possibility of AI technology on an XR headset.

The XR platform will likely feature the most powerful Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset, and we may also see more efficient and powerful headset-specific chipsets. We look forward to the developer launch and await more detailed insights.
