Red Star News learned that the opening ceremony and award ceremony of the 2024 International Conference on Basic Sciences was held at the New Tsinghua Academy of Tsinghua University on July 14. The conference focused on academic discussions and exchanges in the three basic science fields of mathematics, theoretical physics, and theoretical computer and information science, and awarded the Basic Science Lifetime Achievement Award and Frontier Science Award.

Four Fields Medal winners including Edward Witten and Caucher Birkar, three Turing Award winners including Yao Qizhi and Leslie G. Valiant, International Mathematical Union President Nakajima Kei, many winners of international awards such as the Shaw Prize, Wolf Prize, and Breakthrough Prize in Science, more than 70 academicians from various countries and presidents of more than 10 domestic universities were invited to attend the conference.

In his speech, Shing-Tung Yau, President of the International Conference on Basic Sciences and Fields Medal winner, said that with the rapid development of artificial intelligence in recent years, the integration and interaction of the three basic science fields of mathematics, theoretical physics, and theoretical computer and information science will bring more exciting breakthroughs. Yau believes that the basic sciences of the 21st century will continue to develop in the mutual understanding and impact of mathematics, physics and artificial intelligence.

It is reported that the 2024 Basic Science Lifetime Achievement Award was presented at the opening ceremony of the conference. Six scientists, Andrew Wiles, Richard Hamilton, Edward Witten, Alexei Kitaev, Yao Qizhi, and Leslie Valiant, received this honor.

The opening ceremony also awarded the Basic Science Frontier Science Award. 139 outstanding papers in the field of basic science from universities, research institutes and enterprises in more than 20 countries and regions were selected, including 88 in the field of mathematics, 24 in the field of theoretical physics, and 27 in the field of theoretical computer and information science.

The 2024 International Basic Science Conference will be held from July 14 to 26 for two weeks, attracting more than 800 domestic and foreign scholars to gather in Beijing Huairou Science City. During the conference, more than 500 plenary reports, special academic conferences and satellite conferences will be held, covering basic science reports, frontier science award reports, basic physics reports, etc., aiming to share cutting-edge achievements in the field of basic science and look forward to the future development direction of basic research.
