The well-received air combat game "Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown" recently landed on the Switch platform. To celebrate the release of the game, foreign media interviewed the producer of the Switch version of "Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown" Ryunosuke Hagiwara to learn about the story behind this ported work.

In the interview, Ryunosuke Hagiwara said that they hope to let more players experience the charm of the "Ace Combat" series, so they decided to port the latest work to the Switch platform. He explained that when conducting user research, they found that many players were interested in "Ace Combat", but they could not experience the game because they did not have a console.

As for why they chose to port the game to the Switch later in its life cycle, Ryunosuke Hagiwara said that they had been considering expanding the game to other platforms since 2022 to allow more players to experience the heroic journey of the "Ace Pilot". After repeated testing and optimization, they finally launched the Switch version on July 11, 2024.

In order to restore the visual effects of the game on Switch, the development team optimized the game and retained the weather and light and shadow effects in the original game as much as possible. They also admitted that they encountered many challenges in the porting process, such as how to balance the picture quality and frame rate, and how to port the game to a lower-performance platform.

Target frame rates and resolutions for ACE COMBAT 7 on Switch are: Docked and Handheld Mode: 720p 30fps (variable)

The port was developed by Bandai Namco in collaboration with external partners, with assistance from past Ace Combat series developers and other internal personnel.

For those who are not familiar with the Ace Combat series, Hagiwara Ryunosuke emphasized that each work is an independent story, and it is easy to get started even if you have not played the previous works. But he also mentioned that there are connections between the series. For example, the story of Ace Combat 7 takes place in the same area as Ace Combat 4, and some scenes will be familiar to players who have played Ace Combat 4.

Finally, Ryunosuke Hagiwara stated that it is currently not possible to reveal more information about the new "Ace Combat" game announced to be under development in 2021, but they are working hard to develop it and hope that players will wait patiently.

The Switch version of "Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown" is now on sale.
